Brighton & Hove Albion are the visitors to Filbert Way on Sunday for the Club's first Barclays Women's Super League outing of 2023 (3pm kick-off). City, who remain bottom of the table with no points, have benefitted from a lengthy break in action, allowing new manager Willie Kirk to work with the players at Belvoir Drive. That progress was on show during Wednesday's 5-0 victory over Sunderland in the Continental Tyres League Cup, but Brighton are likely to pose a sterner test this weekend. Tierney, a key member of the side and a FA Women's Championship title winner, spoke to the media on Friday to describe City's determination to climb the league standings.
"The togetherness in the team is still the same and we’re still willing to fight and we know we can produce on the pitch," the former Sheffield United defender explained.
"It’s a sense of excitement. We’ve had a break and we’ve started to nail things down and see things progressing. As a player, that’s a good sign.
"It’s definitely a positive and hopefully we’ll take that into the weekend."
Elaborating on the break, Tierney explained why Leicester made sure they maximised the opportunities it offered over the winter months.
"It came at a great time for us," City's No.3 added. "We had a few postponements which probably made the break a bit longer.
"It was definitely needed, to work on the finer details and the things Willie wants to implement. I think we will be hopefully seeing the rewards from that soon.
"Any break can feel like [a pre-season], normally Christmas feels like that. For us, that’s heightened with the position we’re in.
"It was really important to be able to take a bit of a breather, regroup, and we did see it as a fresh start. Hopefully, we’ll be able to start picking up some points."
Brighton sit just one place, but seven points, above Leicester in the WSL table and Tierney is aware of the game's significance on Sunday.
"Obviously, in terms of the game, it’s about managing the game," she said. "It’s about managing the emotions and the stakes.
"In terms of Brighton, they’ve been in the league for a number of years now. They’ve got a clear identity. They’ve got good players. Again, it’s on our home turf and that’s the advantage we need to take.
"We’ll try to settle into the game and produce what we’ve been working on. It’s felt like a very long time since we’ve been at home and that [support] always helps us.
"In the position we’re in, we’re going to need every bit of help, so we need as many fans to come as possible."
