- LCFC Women were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City- Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly scored the goals at Joie Stadium- Sam Tierney gave her reaction to the Barclays Women’s Super League defeat- The Foxes currently sit seventh in the WSL table
Leicester arrived at Joie Stadium off the back of a 1-0 win against Everton, but faced a difficult afternoon against a Man City side currently top of the Barclays Women's Super League.
Set up in a defensive shape, City managed to keep the door shut until the final 10 minutes when the constant pressure from the hosts paid off, courtesy of goals from Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly.
“For 80 minutes, we did what we set out to do,” Tierney explained in a post-match interview. “We frustrated them, don’t get me wrong, we knew we were coming to Man City who have a squad full of talented international players who are trying to win the league.
“But we frustrated them, we adopted a slightly different tactic and shape, and credit to the girls for taking that on board. There were just two elements that made the difference: Lauren Hemp’s goal and the corner.
“It’s disappointing but we held them for a good period. I think that’s credit to us, we had a short amount of time to work on the new style, and that’s down to the hard work of the team and coaches.”
Tierney outlined her frustration to not come away with anything but explained that the quality within the Citizens’ squad made it challenging to hold out, although it was only down to two moments of quality that made the difference.
“Although Man City have quality, we have quality in our squad and there were times that we let ourselves down on the ball,” the midfielder explained. “But defensively we worked really hard to the plan, and just disappointing we didn’t get anything.
“In the first half especially, they didn’t create many chances, which you could see because they tried to change. We then started getting deeper, which is natural to happen against these teams but makes it difficult.
“There were two deciding moments, and on another day, maybe we’re lucky to not let them in and we get a draw.”
Looking ahead, City now prepare for a fifth-round fixture in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, when they welcome Birmingham City to Pirelli Stadium for a 12pm GMT kick-off.
“We just need to keep being as positive as we can and taking it game by game,” Tierney added. “The next game we’ve got is the cup game which provides a different challenge, but the fact we can adapt is good.
“You need to be flexible in this league, and also we need to keep working on the ball, because I think we could improve with the time we do have possession, to allow us to create more chances to be a threat in this league.”
