- LCFC Women held to a 2-2 draw with West Ham United- Lena Petermann scored her fourth goal of the season on Sunday afternoon- Honoka Hayashi equalised late on at King Power Stadium- The Foxes head into the Christmas break with 10 points in the Barclays Women’s Super League
The calendar year was brought to a close for the Foxes by welcoming bottom-placed West Ham United for a final outing on Filbert Way. Lena Petermann broke the deadlock halfway through the second period, but the Foxes were denied all three points when Honoka Hayashi equalised in the seventh minute of additional time. “I don’t think our performance was great or that we necessarily deserved to win the game,” Kirk admitted following the full-time whistle. “But when we’re 1-0 up against 10 players, we need to see the game out, so from that perspective it’s two points dropped. “We’ve had a big focus on our work out of possession because we feel like that’s what has been letting us down, but what we noticed is that we weren’t fluid in possession.
“Personally, I’m disappointed with our performance; I expected more from us today. We never really threatened them. We tried to find ways to threaten their backline and I don’t think we really did that.
“The players that were missing with injuries are all players with pace, and that’s really hard to replace, so that is hindering us a little bit, but we’ve got to think about solutions.
“That’s my job, and that’s the players’ job to find a way around that. We found a way to stay in the game, with a few half chances at either end, and the goal we did take, was good.
“That was pleasing to see, and it gave us something to hold on to where I thought we weathered the storm a little bit. Then West Ham went down to 10 and to be honest I felt fairly comfortable.
“But I don’t think the nerves were from having the one-goal lead, but instead defending the goal. We haven’t tracked a runner and maybe Jani (Janina Leitzig) could’ve taken the cross, but I need to watch it back.” Despite dropping two points at the final hurdle, it has been a year of progress for City, who sit eighth in the WSL, and have scored against every opponent they have faced this term. With key players, such as Shannon O’Brien, CJ Bott and Hannah Cain, all sidelined with injury, Kirk believes this is the perfect time for the winter break, to allow his team to rest, reset and return stronger for their restart in January. “The break has come at an excellent time,” the 45-year-old stated. “We need the break and to reset and we need to get back in together again after Christmas to work towards the Derby and Aston Villa games.
“We’re a couple of points short in terms of where we want to be because we feel like we have left six points on the pitch in terms of leads we should’ve held. That is frustrating but there’s nothing we can do about it.
“We need to go forward and start accumulating points as quickly as possible in the second half of the season.”
