_- LCFC Women head into the international break with a first win of 2022/23- The Foxes beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in the Continental Tyres League Cup- Defender Demi Vance gave LCFC TV her take on the comprehensive victory_- She believes the group will take that confidence into their next WSL game
The Foxes defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Sunday, with first goals for the Club from Mackenzie Smith, Connie Scofield and Aileen Whelan sealing a maiden victory of the season. The first arrived just six minutes in at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium and was followed by two second-half strikes to ensure City lead the Group B standings after matchday one. Making her start for Leicester, the defender lined up on the left side of a back four as Lydia Bedford switched personnel and the system deployed against the Barclays Women’s Championship side, including three Academy graduates in the starting XI. Speaking to LCFC TV after full-time, Vance commented: “I think it was important for us as a group to really kick-start our season and we did that with the goals and the clean sheet. Going into the game, we knew we needed to get an early goal, it was important to get on top of the game early on. “We showed that we can play football. We rested quite a lot of players today, we changed shape as well, and we adapted to that. It was good, we’re very adaptive and that showed in the game.
“It was nice to get my full debut and a full 90 minutes and if I can help any of the younger players coming through then that’s what I want to be able to do throughout the season. We all train together, and everyone knows their roles and responsibilities, which I think we carried out very well.”
Yet to register a point in the WSL this term, the full-back admitted the last-gasp defeat by Everton just three days prior to facing Blackburn was deflating for the team, who were then able to show their character to produce a dominant display in Lancashire. “After Thursday night, it was very tough to take, whether you were on or off the pitch,” the Northern Ireland international admitted. “We’re together as one big group and I think we all picked each other up in the last couple of days.
“We knew that it was important to get the goals and that we kept the clean sheet as well, as that gives the defence and goalkeeper real confidence, so it feels really good. We did that and got the win.
“Sometimes it’s tough whenever your season doesn’t kick off quite the way you want it to and especially given the performances that the girls have put in. I think today we got our rewards, so it’s important that we kick on from this.
“We’re coming up to an international break as well and I think we’ve built confidence going into that and hopefully we can carry that on when we get back in.”
