After an opening day victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate, thanks to goals from Aimee Palmer, Shannon O’Brien, Lena Petermann and Jutta Rantala, the Foxes headed home for the first time this term for the visit of the Toffees.
A crucial penalty save from Janina Leitzig spurred the Foxes on to win the game in the second half thanks to a second of the season for Petermann, who birthday girl Tierney supplied in the scoreline’s defining moment.
“I think I’ve aged during the game,” the midfielder joked in her post-match interview. “I’m not 25 years-old, more like 45! But it’s nice to get the win. Looking at the table, it’s early days, but it’s a game we knew we needed to impose ourselves on and get the points which we’ve done.
“I just remember picking the ball up in the middle of the field, driving with it and then hearing Missy [Goodwin] on the left screaming for it. I was caught in two minds, but Lena [Petermann] was closer to the goal and on another day that pass might not have come off, but luckily it did today.”
Leicester made nine new signings this summer, which included high-profile players such as Petermann and Janice Cayman, the former having won two UEFA Women’s Champions League medals in her career, and Tierney explained the impact the new players are having on the team, both on and off the pitch.
She added: “You can see in her (Petermann) performances that she brings different elements. She’s strong, can hold the ball up and she’s clinical. But what I like is how hard she works for the team, and the standards she sets in the team.
“Credit to the new players, they’ve come in and gelled really well. I think that’s based on their personalities; they’re all lovely people. I hope they think I’m approachable, maybe not so much on the pitch, but they bring a lot to my game and I’m learning a lot from them.”
Leicester have collected maximum points in the WSL so far this campaign, and while the No.3 doesn’t want to get too far ahead of herself, the team have come into this season stronger and with a wealth of experience.
On a day which means a lot to her, Tierney was happy to play such a big part in Leicester’s first win and clean sheet of the season and wanted to dedicate the performance to a family member who inspired her career in football.
“The WSL gets stronger every year,” the 25-year-old stated. “But our improvement is based on our hard work each day in training, and we’ve added that different element to our team this year. We’re learning how this league works and with the experiences we’ve got in the squad we know what to expect and hopefully we can build on that.
“I’m usually training on my birthday, but it means a lot as it was on my birthday that my grandad passed away. He was the one that got me into football, so today’s win and assist is for him.”
