- LCFC Women lost 4-1 to Manchester City in the WSL on Sunday- Leicester went ahead at King Power Stadium thanks to Jess Sigsworth’s goal- Man City scored twice in each half to take all three points on Filbert Way- Manager Jonathan Morgan gave his reaction to LCFC TV following full-time
Both teams headed into the game out of form in the league, but it was Leicester who raced into the lead inside the first minute at King Power Stadium, courtesy of Jess Sigsworth's first goal for the Club.
The Foxes were unable to capitalise on that early advantage, however, and fell behind following strikes from Caroline Weir and Keira Walsh. Lauren Hemp and Laura Coombs added further goals in the second half to ensure it would be the Manchester side claiming the points on Filbert Way.
The manager was frustrated with the manner of the goals conceded, and also felt City could have made more of their own opportunities during the second period, leaving them wondering what might have been on another day.
“We’re disappointed really, after such a fantastic start,” Morgan admitted to LCFC TV. “We worked on a certain way to press them earlier on and we obviously got dividends from that but just couldn’t hold out.
“I think three out of their four goals were just errors on our part, which we just need to get better at, but we’ll keep working hard on the training ground, we’ll keep moving forward. Unfortunately, today it wasn’t meant to be.
Tash [Flint] came on and she had such a good opportunity but needed to pull the trigger earlier. That’s the difference really, they are ruthless with their opportunities, whereas we sort of hesitated a little bit.
“While we had some good spells in the second half for 20 to 25 minutes, we were in the ascendency and we were looking for that equaliser, we just couldn’t. Then obviously the sucker punch came from that long ball through to Hemp which she finished.
“But again, from our point of view, it was just poor positioning on our behalf to allow that goal. We looked to go and take the game to them in the second half. We felt we could exploit them, and as you saw, we did a little, but we just couldn’t get the goal that we wanted.”
A lightning start on Filbert Way saw Sigsworth’s goal send the 2,464-strong crowd into raptures inside 60 seconds and Morgan was once again full of praise for the support the team received throughout the contest.
“It was fantastic when the first goal went in,” he enthused. “There was a sense of relief from everyone around the stadium. The fans, as always, were fantastic today, they were exceptional, and you heard them until the very end.
“The standing ovation that they gave when the girls walked over to them at the end was something that will stay in my memory for a long time. They are so committed to this team.
“They see our players as such good role models to keep supporting us through this moment in time with our form and it’s just great to have them in here and we’re looking forward to having them here every game.”
There are now plenty of learnings to take into next Sunday's clash away at Brighton & Hove Albion, Morgan believes, as the Foxes continue to search for their first points in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
The manager added: “I think it was 50 seconds in when we scored. It was very early and while it’s fantastic, we’ve not been used to that much this season. I think the only time we were in the lead was against Aston Villa, so I think it was a little bit like deer in the headlights.
“We got a little bit too deep, we kept dropping back which allowed Man City to grow back into the game, when realistically we should have stuck to what we planned. The game is a massive learning curve, a massive experience for the girls.
“But you saw that little bit of extra quality that City have. Their reaction times are quicker, they are a bit fitter. Lauren Hemp caused trouble today and she is a fantastic player that we highlighted but just couldn’t quite contain her.
“Obviously, she got the two goals but going ahead so early didn’t help us. It’s just something for us to take on board and look how to manage those scenarios in the future.”
