Leicester City defeated Queens Park Rangers 6-2 in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round on Saturday
The Foxes cruised into the fourth round with a brace from James Justin and a Jamie Vardy penalty
Facundo Buonanotte was also on the scoresheet before Wout Faes' late stunner
Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy reflected on Saturday afternoon’s performance
A 6-2 success on Saturday afternoon ensured safe passage into round four of the competition which the Foxes lifted in 2021, ending a run of five straight defeats, all of which came in the Premier League. As for this FA Cup tie, it was never completely plain sailing for City against the EFL Championship outfit, who levelled early on but were eventually blown away by a couple of scintillating spells of attacking play which pleased the Manager.
“We wanted to continue to build on the performances that we felt we’ve had over the last couple of weeks against Champions League opponents,” the Dutchman said post-match at King Power Stadium. “We wanted to show that again today in the cup. Job done at King Power Stadium.
“It was a very important one for us, not only because we want to break through the losing streak but also to continue developing, scoring goals and having good performances - and that was good today.”
Goals from Stephy Mavididi, Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Vardy, Wout Faes and a James Justin brace were enough to book a place in the next round, though improvements still need to be made, van Nistelrooy warned, with Rayan Kolli able to capitalise on an error for the visitors’ second. “I like the way that the players are working together in the things we want and the different phases of play,” the former PSV manager explained. “I’m happy with their development and today you saw some different goals - from possession, from pressing high up the pitch and also from counter attacks.
“There are different ways to score goals and it showed today. The theme after Man City and Villa was individual mistakes which cost us games. Today we had a couple of individual mistakes, but it didn’t cost us, but it’s something that we have to keep addressing.”
Martí Cifuentes’ men provided a strong enough test to prepare Leicester for the challenges to come in the immediate future, with Crystal Palace and Fulham both due on Filbert Way next week.
A big contribution from the Moroccan.
The 48-year-old continued: “I wouldn’t call them just a Championship team because I think the way that they are coached and worked means they are very well organised on and off the ball.
“I saw some very good patterns and technical ability within their team. It wasn’t an easy one today and all credit to them. For us, it was a good night with the crowd and something that we can build on looking towards Wednesday.
Buonanotte notched a goal and an assist while fellow playmaker Bilal El Khannouss also shone with a brace of first-half assists, but while praising their attacking influences, van Nistelrooy was keen to reflect on the whole squad’s efforts. He added: “They both played well, but I think I can mention a lot of other players who had good performances. Also, there were players who started having been on the bench for other games and the other way around – this is a team effort and we need everyone to have a good season.”
