The veteran shot-stopper became our second signing of the day on Thursday, closely following Conor Chaplin in arriving in Seagrave ahead of the start of the new Sky Bet League One season.

Joining on a deal until 2028, he explained why Leicester was the right fit and outlined an eagerness to link up with his team-mates as we aim to embark on a successful campaign in the third tier.

“It's obviously amazing to be at a club like Leicester,” the 36-year-old began, speaking at his new base, LCFC Training Ground. “I've settled in, in the first few days. I've done my medical, bits and bobs with the physios and just had a feel around the place to see what it's like.

“I've met some of the staff here already but I'm looking forward to meeting the group. I've heard it's a really good group, a really young group. So with them being young, obviously they're going to be really hungry.

“But from what I've seen already, I know the history of the Club, and the expectations, so I'm delighted to be here. It's an unbelievable club.

“When you walk into the training ground here, the facilities are incredible. It's literally everything you'd want at a training ground. I know the ambitions that everyone wants to achieve this season. It's a very exciting project.

“I'm just looking forward to getting going. I did a light session today and then hopefully joining in tomorrow, doing a bit more, building it up. I can't wait.”

Working under Russell Martin for the second time in his career, the Manager’s style and approach was a key factor in McCarthy agreeing to take this step.

“Speaking with the Manager before I came here, I knew what he wanted,” the one-time England international commented. “Obviously, that was a big attraction to come to this Football Club.

“I previously worked with him at Southampton, so I know what he’s about, I know what his beliefs are and I know the way he works.

“I had an amazing time with him in Southampton. He went on to do different things, so it's nice to come back and be working with him again.”

Boasting a long and distinguished career in the English game, McCarthy wants to help develop a tight-knit group and impart his experience on the younger lads who he’ll be working closely with inside the goalkeeping department.

“I played against Jakub [Stolarczyk] a couple of times I think over the last few years,” he recalled. “I trained this morning with a couple of the younger ones, they seem great guys, willing to learn, willing to want to do the right things. It was a breath of fresh air training with them this morning.

“The goalie coach (Tom Weal), I've met him a couple of times leading up to today and I'm just looking to sort of gatekeep that goalkeeping union, tighten it and make sure everyone's pushing each other. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing.

“I'm older now and I've been in and around the game a long time, so I've seen a lot of stuff, but I remember being back at that age and always looking up to the older, more experienced goalkeepers, asking them certain things, trying to help me with my game.

“I've always been open. I've always wanted to help the younger ones in any sort of way or form I can help them. I'll give them bits of advice - whether they want to use it or not is completely up to them - but I'm always there for them to speak to me and ask anything that they want to ask me.”
