The Foxes are seeking to move further clear of the relegation zone with victory over the Seagulls on Sunday (3pm GMT kick-off), as we return to King Power Stadium for the first time in over a month, with tickets remaining available to purchase. Ahead of the fixture, City’s Manager sat down with the media to share her pre-match thoughts after a two-week break from competitive action…
‘Feeling refreshed’
A goal for Karla Torres in last week's friendly.
A mid-season friendly against Barclays Women’s Championship opposition allowed the squad to keep ticking over in the midst of an unusually lengthy interruption to the league schedule, also enabling players to return to fitness and new signings such as Karla Torres to further bed into the squad. “They had some rest and I hope they are feeling refreshed,” Miquel commented. “The idea was to keep some rhythm so we played against Sheffield United. It was a good opportunity for everyone to get minutes and to prepare for the end of the season.
“It went well and we’re pleased with the rhythm that we have right now. Now we know what we have to show on Sunday.”
‘The content is important’
A tough battle with the Blues in the capital last time out.
Now sitting just three points ahead of 12th-placed Crystal Palace as things stand, yet to register a win away from home in the league, it’s a welcome return to Filbert Way this weekend, providing another opportunity to put points on the board as we enter the business end of the season.
In terms of performances, Miquel feels that improvements have been made and her side were unfortunate not to take anything from recent defeats on the road to the division’s top two sides.
She continued: “We haven’t given up on winning away, it is not forbidden. We are allowed to win away. We know it’s a tough league, so I did not feel relaxed at any moment, even though there were more points difference. I don’t think it’s the type of league where you can relax until the last minute of the last game. That’s how it should be.
“The last games we played were not easy. Manchester United were in great form. Even though we didn’t get any points, I felt we played well in the second half and the Chelsea game was even better than when we drew against them.
“What’s important is the content and I’m a strong believer that if the content is good, at some point you will get a good result. When, I don’t know, but if we come off the pitch knowing that we did our best and we’re happy with what we did, then that’s the most important thing right now.”
‘Improving offensively’
The Seagulls celebrate success at Spurs.
Brighton arrive with serious momentum following their recent results – victory at Tottenham Hotspur and a draw with league leaders Chelsea lifting the Seagulls up to fifth and pushing towards challenging at the top of the table.
Facing the South Coast outfit for the third time this season, with one defeat and a goalless draw, both sides will know each other well and Miquel is expecting the approach to be centred around striking a balance between both boxes.
“I think it’s mostly down to us,” the 41-year-old explained. “In both games it was very close. We have to make sure that we are as strong defensively as we were in those two games. Now we are improving offensively, which has been in the case in the second phase, we are scoring more goals.
“Now it’s balancing scoring more but not conceding more. We are halfway on that and we will do our best on Sunday to defend well to then give us the opportunity to preserve the score as long as we can and open situations up front to go and score.
“Being compact defensively will be important and to attack better. I think it’s going to be a game where both teams are going to create chances and will plan to go forward. Even though we are conceding a few more goals than we were in the first phase, we are scoring more.”
