Leicester looked to be home and dry after Shannon O’Brien, Saori Takarada and Shana Chossenotte all netted in the first half, but it turned into a nervy ending at King Power Stadium, with Madison Haley pulling one back before Yuka Momiki missed the chance to re-establish the three-goal buffer, unable to score her penalty.
Fran Kirby soon converted a spot-kick for the Seagulls, too, ahead of a nail-biting finale in which City did enough to claim maximum points and move away from the relegation zone, now positioned six points clear of bottom-of-the-table Crystal Palace with five matches remaining.
We’re on home soil again next Sunday, welcoming Tottenham Hotspur to Filbert Way for a 2pm GMT kick-off, with the Lilywhites now just one place above Leicester in the table. A blistering start
The Foxes went close on two occasions prior to the opener and it was Chossenotte, one of the four to come into the starting XI, who made a sharp impact on her return, cutting inside and striking over the bar, before O’Brien connected with a Hannah Cain cross, diverting her header wide.
The forward wouldn’t miss on the second occasion, picking up the ball on the edge of the box and arrowing a low strike into the bottom corner beyond Melina Loeck’s reach – the perfect start back on Filbert Way.
Janina Leitzig got down to deny Nadine Noordam shortly after and preserve the advantage, while Swaby soon made an important block on Nikita Parris’ goalbound effort, too, after the England international beat Leitzig.
Cain’s impact
The Wales international provided two assists.
City made sure it was a healthy half-time lead, with Cain crossing for Takarada to turn home via a first-time finish and score her first of the season.
And another Cain cross led to the third in injury-time, bundled home from close range by Chossenotte, with Loeck left on the floor.
The right-hand side was a fruitful area in the first half for the Foxes and two goals came from play down that area of the pitch. It then required quality from Cain to deliver the crosses into the box.
Holding on
Big relief at full-time after the late Leitzig stop.
Haley was involved in several key moments in the second half, bending one into the corner to pull a goal back for Dario Vidošić's side before felling Sam Tierney at the other end to hand City a penalty.
Momiki couldn’t make it 4-1 from 12 yards, though, and soon gave away a spot-kick which Kirby made no mistake in converting, sending Leitzig the wrong way.
That led to a barrage of Brighton pressure during the closing stages, but, with the Blue Army behind the team creating a cacophony of noise, it was pressure that City withstood, leading to a record-breaking streak of home wins in the WSL, with a chance to extend that against Spurs a week today.
