We welcome Tonda Eckert’s Saints to King Power Stadium for a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday evening aiming to reverse a run of five league matches without a win, with four of those ending in defeat.
Speaking to reporters following the 2-1 reverse at Birmingham City on Saturday, the First Team Coach looked ahead to the next challenge we face this midweek.
‘We need the support’
Abdul Fatawu scored our goal at Birmingham.
Abdul Fatawu’s goal wasn’t enough to take anything from St. Andrew’s at the weekend, with Birmingham claiming all three points against the 10-men of Leicester, who saw Bobby De Cordova-Reid shown a straight red card in the first half, after the hosts had took an early lead.
Now focus must shift to producing a better all-round performance in front of the Blue Army and try to use our home advantage.
“The two incidents have a massive influence on the game and then it makes it difficult for us,” King reflected. “The first goal, they’ve not had to work for that. I thought we had good control of the game and got back into it. After the red, it was always going to be difficult.
“Four times this season we’ve had red cards in the first half. Anyone who knows football knows that playing 10 vs. 11 for any amount of time is difficult, let alone for over an hour for the last two games.”
‘We have to change things’
Debutants Jamaal Lascelles and Joe Aribo both came into the starting XI on Saturday, and while neither played the full 90 minutes, King was pleased with their contributions.
Divine Mukasa and Dujuan Richards also made their Foxes bows from the bench and are potentially in line for a start in midweek, with Bobby De Cordova-Reid now suspended and Joe Aribo ineligible.
“With all four new players, we brought them in because we’re looking to use them,” the 43-year-old explained. “Divine hasn’t played loads of football. He’s been on the cusp of things at Man City, so he’s not had loads of minutes.
“It’s the same with Joe and Jamaal. They are going to be needed to get the game time and get up to speed. I thought both did really well, they gave us a lot. They gave us everything I knew they would, in terms of experience, leadership, know-how and being ready to go straight in.
“I would have liked to have left them on for longer but the condition when they are in when they’ve come, they haven’t played loads of football, they’ve only being doing training sessions.
“We’re fairly thin as a squad so we’re not in a position to be losing people at the moment. I was really happy with them and a lot of the players. But I’m not happy with the result and the manner of it.
“The situation we’re in, the run of form we’ve been on, our lack of clean sheets, we have to be changing things. We’ve changed some of the set-ups, but they’ve gone out of the window with the red cards.
“It’s just about making sure we’re doing the best to get results. Bego (Asmir Begovic) came in with his experience. I thought we were really young against Charlton. Looking back, we had Ben [Nelson], Louis [Page], Bade [Aluko], Jak [Stolarczyk] in his first full season as well. Bego gives us a bit more experience in the team.
“Southampton are a good team and have a slightly different system, so we’ll see when we watch them. We’ll have to see what we pick on Tuesday.”
‘Take accountability’
Back on Filbert Way this Tuesday.
Now on 32 points from 31 matches, with six deducted as of last week, the fight is on to climb up the standings. Improvements must be made, King warned, with a quick turnaround to facing the Saints back on home soil.
“We have full clarity of where it leaves us in the table,” he added. “The important thing, for us, is at least now we know. We’ve 15 games to make sure we’re not below that line at the end of the season. If the lads give what they’ve given for the last couple of games, then we’ll be okay.
“But let’s not be arrogant or naïve to think we’re on a good run of form, doing okay and that everything will be alright. We have to accept that what we’ve served up over a period of time now hasn’t been good enough results-wise and that has to improve.
“No one wants to be put in the position we are in the league, but we have to have a recognition that we’re only that far down the table because, over the course of 31 games, we haven’t been good enough. We have to take accountability for ourselves.
“We’ll do as much as we can but it’s about recovering physically, trying to get people in a positive head space as well. The lads know they’ve done some good stuff, but we are where we are in the league now and we need to make sure we’re picking up points and try and start swinging the momentum the other way to move up the table.”
