We were held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday evening
Luke Ayling's stoppage-time goal cancelled out Jordan Ayew's opener from the penalty spot
Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic made his Leicester City debut in place of the injured Jakub Stolarczyk
The disappointment of this result must now drive the team forward, the Bosnian says
Jordan Ayew’s penalty looked to have secured all three points for the Foxes at King Power Stadium on Tuesday, only for Luke Ayling to equalise with virtually the last action of the game, leaving us winless in five in the Sky Bet Championship.
Having dealt with a host of set pieces and aerial duels, the Bosnian ‘keeper felt we showed grit and determination to battle against the Teesside outfit and hold on to the lead during the second half, making the end result an extremely tough one to take.
“There’s bitter disappointment,” Begovic admitted. “That’s the worst way to lose a winning result. I know we didn’t lose the game, but it certainly feels like it in a way. It’s a tough ending, it’s a real blow.
“I thought we did a lot of things really well for most of the game; really competed as a team for 90+ minutes in tough conditions on the night and the fans were really behind us. Everything was going well, but there’s nothing we can do now.”
Making his City bow as a half-time substitute following Jakub Stolarczyk’s injury, the 38-year-old summer signing became the Club's fourth oldest debutant and was pleased to be on the pitch for the first time this season, denying Tommy Conway one-on-one, a save which could have proved crucial.
“I really enjoyed being back out there until the 95th minute, that’s about right,” the shot-stopper continued. “But I would have enjoyed it a lot more with three points. Of course, it’s an honour to make my debut, it’s great.
“Obviously [I became] a lot more comfortable as the game went on, as you would expect and imagine. It’s never easy to come on during the game, no matter the circumstances. That (the save) was a nice moment.
“We get the sending off after that, so a lot of things going our way and trying to change our luck. Those are the small, fine margins in football that maybe didn’t go our way in the end. We’ve got to take a lot of heart from the performance.”
Norwich City provide our next opposition on Saturday as we make the trip to Carrow Road aiming to bounce back quickly from the disappointment. Regrouping as a squad is the only way to move forward, the former Everton and QPR ‘keeper told us.
“There’s only one option – that’s to pick ourselves up,” he added. “We have to take it on the chin and go again. There’s no getting away from it, we have to keep working, keep pushing and stay together.
“We have to analyse it, look at it, learn from those last moments and make sure we get better and not let it happen again. We’ve got another big game in four days’ time.
“Everyone is looking forward to the challenge against Norwich. I’m sure we’ll have an amazing travelling crowd supporting us, so we’ve just got to go there and give it a go.”
