Their mission was one of remembrance, respect, and connection: to trace and pay tribute to the final resting places of former Leicester Fosse players, and some of their own relatives, who lost their lives during the First World War.
The Silver Foxes have had a home with Leicester City in the Community for years, creating a space for older fans to connect and socialise, reducing social isolation and offering support where needed. Part of the Silver Foxes Together programme, the group also provides support for older people with dementia or mobility issues. They meet twice a month at King Power Stadium, and regularly go on trips both within the UK and internationally.
Inspired by the Foxes Remembered documentary made by LCFC around a decade ago, the Silver Foxes embarked on a trip to Bruges and Ypres, with the idea of locating some of the graves of fallen Leicester Fosse players. In preparation, the group heard from Club Historian John Hutchinson, who helped point them in the right direction. Most of the Silver Foxes are City fans, following the Club home and away. This time, they followed a little further.
Organised by Leicester City in the Community, with the help of volunteer Roy Bent, the trip was an incredible deep dive into the history of the Club these fans have supported for so long. Several final resting places of Leicester Fosse players were located, and it was an emotional time for all involved.
Participant Jan shared her experiences.
The trip had a personal connection for participant Jan: “When we were offered the chance to go on the trip, I jumped at it, because I recently found out that my grand uncle is buried in one of the cemeteries in Ypres, and none of the family had ever been. The man leading the tours actually traced where he was buried, and we made a trip to go and see him, which was really special and meant a lot to me.
“The experience on the whole trip was amazing, the organisation that went in from Leicester City in the Community was incredible, and we all had a fantastic time.”
Speaking of the organisation of the trip, Leicester City in the Community volunteer Roy said: “We wanted to give those that went on the trip an enjoyable experience and I think we managed to do that. The highlight of the trip was the camaraderie, from the coaches to the ferry, everyone was enjoying themselves, but it was the community we created was incredible.”
The group already has plans to return to Belgium in the future, with the 2025 trip having a profound impact on all of them.
Roy continued: “One thing that hit home to me was the devastation in the photos we saw, compared to the places we were standing in, it was a huge contrast to the horrors of war, and I think that was something I felt I’d take away.”
Silver Foxes Together is run by Leicester City in the Community and currently funded by the National Lottery Awards For All grant. The Silver Foxes are a welcoming group, open to anyone over the age of 55.
