Our No.10 struck with 12 minutes remaining at Ewood Park to seal a 12th league win of this campaign – confirming a final points tally of 46 and position of 23rd, five points adrift of safety.
This match was also Ricardo Pereira’s 220th and final outing for the Club after eight years of service at Leicester City, saying goodbye to the travelling fans in person after announcing his departure on Friday. But, as a result of back-to-back relegations, we’ll contest third tier football for the second time in our history next year.
Early chances
It was a muted start in Lancashire, with the fate of both sides already determined before kick-off. Beforehand, there was applause in tribute to Tony Parkes, one of Blackburn's longest-serving players and coaches, who has died at the age of 76.
Our first opportunity fell to Academy graduate Hamza Choudhury, whose header looped wide of the Rovers net in front of the Ronnie Clayton Blackburn End. Harry Souttar, starting again after his return from a lengthy injury lay-off, then headed straight into Balazs Toth, while a Mavididi curler was also too close to the home ‘keeper.
We had over 2,000 members of the Blue Army making the trip on Saturday and there were more opportunities for a Leicester goal before the break. Jannik Vestergaard was involved in two goalmouth scrambles, but Toth and his defensive colleagues did just about enough to clear the danger.
Blackburn threaten
Louis Page, one of five players in the starting XI to have come through our youth ranks, was the next Fox to go close. His volley bobbled narrowly wide though. Before the break, and the other side of it, Michael O’Neill’s Rovers began to threaten more regularly.
Moussa Baradji put Jakub Stolarczyk to work, the Pole making a strong-armed stop, before Adam Forshaw was also denied in the latter moments of the first half. Blackburn went very close twice in the early stages of the second period.
Baradji and Yuki Ohashi both had clear sights of goal but each conspired to drag wide inside 60 seconds of each other. It wasn’t long before the latter was nodding over the frame of Stolarczyk’s goal as the home side began to put some sustained pressure on.
Mavididi wins the game
Todd Cantwell was introduced from the bench for the latter stages and caused issues, half-volleying an inch or two over just after the hour mark. Taylor Gardner-Hickman sent an audacious drive fizzing just a touch the wrong side of the post from 30 yards too.
Only a sterling stop from Toth prevented substitute Jordan Ayew from sealing the points with 13 minutes remaining, tipping his low effort round the base of the post. The Ghanaian would play a role in our winner, squaring it over to Mavididi in the 78th minute to place it in the net at the second attempt and give the travelling fans something to cheer.
There was a late LCFC debut from the bench for young centre-back Kevon Gray, while Ricardo was given a warm reception from the Blue Army upon his exit from the action, as we went into the final moments ahead. That's how it ended in Lancashire, as Vestergaard and on-loan midfielder Jordan James also went close, as our focus now shifts to preparing for 26/27 in League One.
