Leicester City, one-time winners of the FA Cup, head into this tie on the back of a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion, sitting 12th in the Championship. The Robins, on the other hand, have already contested two rounds of this season's FA Cup, overcoming Bradford City and Buxton, also winning their last league clash, defeating Crawley Town 3-0 at home, leaving them 18th in the fourth tier. That means there are currently 53 places between the sides in English football’s pyramid, but it’ll be XI vs. XI come kick-off at The EV Charger Points Stadium on Saturday nevertheless. Delving into Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith’s archives, ahead of just our third competitive meeting with Cheltenham, we’ve taken a look at our history with the Robins and the FA Cup Third Round in general.
Past Encounters With Cheltenham
As we've said, our head-to-head record is a limited one, with the two clubs only previously meeting during the 2008/09 League 1 season. That year, we completed a pair of convincing victories. A 4-0 success at Whaddon Road in August was followed by an identical scoreline on Filbert Way the following March, as the Foxes surged towards promotion. Lloyd Dyer notched a brace in the away fixture, alongside solitary efforts from Matt Oakley and Steve Howard. Back on home soil later in the campaign, Howard and Oakley were on the scoresheet again, with Matty Fryatt and Tom Cleverley also getting in on the act. There are limited links with the Robins in general with Peter Rushworth, Barry Hayles, Josh Debayo and Aaron Ramsey populating our shared alumni over the years.
FA Cup Record
The Emirates FA Cup occupies a special place in our story, crowned by a first triumph in the competition in 2021. That landmark success – sealed thanks to a Youri Tielemans-inspired 1-0 final success over Chelsea – came after four previous showpiece defeats and stands as one of the most iconic achievements in Leicester City’s entire history. The third round, meanwhile, has long been a familiar stage for us since the competition’s reorganisation in 1925/26. Since then, in total, City have contested 119 third round ties, recording 57 victories, with the opposition winning on 37 occasions and 25 ties ending level. Arthur Rowley remains our leading goalscorer at this point, with eight goals to his name, while the highest-scoring opposition players at this stage have netted three times against us – Kaare Ingebrigtsen and Nicolas Anelka, both for Manchester City.
Last Times - The FA Cup Third Round
City’s most recent third round hat-trick came during the 2011/12 campaign, when Jermaine Beckford struck three against Nottingham Forest. The last opposition trio, mind you, was from Kaare Ingebrigtsen for Man City in 1993/94. Over the years, the third round has also provided memorable milestones, with significant attendances among them. The highest third round crowd at Filbert Street was 37,060 for the visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1971/72, while King Power Stadium’s record stands at 31,200, recorded against Man City in 2010/11.
In terms of debuts, the most recent Fox to make his bow at this stage was Tawanda Maswanhise, who featured against Millwall in 2023/24. Some of the most notable third round debutants were Wilfred Ndidi (vs. Everton, 2016/17), Demarai Gray (vs. Tottenham Hotspur, 2015/16) and Sol Bamba (vs. Manchester City, 2010/11). Bamba, who tragically passed away at the age of 39 in 2024, scored his first LCFC goal just seconds into that thrilling 2-2 draw with former Foxes midfielder Roberto Mancini’s Citizens.
