Shannon O'Brien's second start of the season was rewarded with her first goal in 358 days, as she cancelled out Kelly Gago's opener. Even at the break, a ruthless second half from the Toffees, in which Katja Snoeijs, Honoka Hayashi and Gago all scored, saw off our advances and we remain on the hunt for our third win of the Barclays Women's Super League campaign. City made one change from the side that beat Liverpool last weekend, with the suspended Ruby Mace, who picked up a fifth yellow card of the season in the fixture, coming out for Hannah Cain. The game was opened up quickly by the hosts who had the lead after five minutes, when Gago, who was unmarked at the back post, had the time to control the ball and found the net.
A first goal since injury for Shannon O'Brien.
After the opening period, the Foxes started to settle and found an equaliser with 16 minutes on the clock; Yuka Momiki the provider with a clever through ball which was controlled quickly by O'Brien, before applying a striker's finish into the bottom corner. The rest of the first half kept switching hands in terms of momentum but Everton went into the break with the majority of possession, looking dangerous on the break.
Following the restart, the pace on the counter attack put the home side back in front, as Snoeijs tapped in from close range after Cain was dispossessed on the edge of the Everton box seconds beforehand.
The task at hand got more difficult for us just before the hour mark when Hayashi, unmarked on the edge of the box, rifled an effort through a crowd of players to extend the Toffees' lead.
With 20 to go, Everton were out of sight as Gago rose highest to score her second of the game, latching onto the end of Toni Payne's deep cross.
One highlight from the second half was the introduction of Hlín Eiríksdóttir, who had a 10 minute debut cameo after her arrival on deadline day.
Currently 11th in the league, and still four points above Crystal Palace, the Foxes press pause of WSL action as they travel to Joie Stadium to face Manchester City in the Adobe Women's FA Cup Fifth Round next Sunday (2pm GMT kick-off).
