The event brought together 300 street-connected young people from more than 20 countries
Young people used football, arts and advocacy to campaign for their rights
Our staff supported both football and congress activities throughout the week
The international event brought together 300 young people representing more than 20 countries, providing a platform for participants to share their experiences, celebrate their cultures and advocate for positive change through football, arts and advocacy.
For many of the young people involved, the tournament marked the first time they had travelled beyond their local communities or left their home countries. Participation in the Street Child United World Cup also enabled many attendees to access legal documentation and official identities, helping to unlock future opportunities and essential services.
Throughout the week, young people took part in football tournaments, creative workshops and congress sessions focused on issues affecting street-connected children around the world. Participants called for greater access to identity, education, protection from violence and gender equality, while sharing their hopes for lasting change within their communities.
The event culminated in a powerful General Assembly as young people took centre stage, presenting their ideas and demands directly to global leaders and calling for greater action to protect and support street-connected children worldwide.
As volunteers, Leicester City in the Community staff supported both the football and congress elements of the event. Including supporting teams during matches, managing pitches, assisting with media activities and delivering advocacy sessions designed to capture and amplify youth voice.
Throughout the week, Tamar Barton worked closely with USA Boys, Bolivia Girls, Malaysia Boys and Wales Girls, while Alice Mason supported England Girls, Argentina Boys, Mexico Boys and Palestine Girls.
Reflecting on the experience, Premier League Inspires Coach Alice said:"Volunteering with Street Child United in Mexico was an incredibly life-affirming experience that left me feeling inspired and hopeful. Despite the challenges that the young people faced, they shared their hopes for systematic change to champion and protect street-connected children globally.
“My personal highlights include watching the General Assembly and seeing how all of the ideas we had discussed in our congress sessions had come together to create a performance that was entirely youth-led and extremely powerful, as well as the constant music, dancing and infectious energy from the young people."
Fellow Premier League Inspires Coach Tamar also reflected on the impact of the event:"Over the past few weeks, I've had the opportunity of a lifetime volunteering with Street Child United at the Street Child World Cup in Mexico.
“It was an incredible experience supporting young athletes from more than 20 countries as they advocated for their rights through football, arts and culture. The event culminated in the General Assembly, where young people stood alongside global leaders to share their stories and call for meaningful change.
“A huge thank you to all the inspiring volunteers, facilitators, young leaders, team leaders and Street Child United staff whose dedication helped provide street-connected children with a powerful platform to be heard."
Leicester City in the Community is incredibly proud of Alice and Tamar for representing the organisation on the international stage and supporting an initiative that empowers young people through sport, education and advocacy.
Their involvement highlights the power of football to create opportunities, amplify young voices and inspire positive change both locally and globally.
