Born in the commune of Gonesse, north east of Paris, the Frenchman arrives at City with a growing reputation in the game and some familiar roots in his home country. The Le Havre academy, in Normandy, is where Woyo harnessed his talent, following in the footsteps of one Riyad Mahrez among others before making a name for himself.
An inventive full-back, able to lean on physical prowess standing at over 6ft, it is in Italy where Coulibaly has settled in senior football, proving crucial over recent years to Parma. He was, in fact, signed during former Manager Enzo Maresca's reign at Parma, although the Italian’s stay in Emilia-Romagna was short-lived.
Play for Parma against Atalanta earlier this season.
Coulibaly, now 25, wasn’t quite ready for full first-team involvement, but before long, he’d turn into a vital cog in I Crociati’s defensive machine. Fabio Pecchia, the ex-Napoli midfielder, was the manager to fully benefit from his talents, as Parma were crowned as Serie B champions, accruing 76 points on their way to promotion to Italy’s top flight.
Woyo made 26 appearances during that triumphant campaign at Ennio Tardini Stadium, registering a brace of assists, and providing a solidity at the back for them to build on. This term, on the other hand, has required a step up, with the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and Roma now providing the opposition in one of Europe’s most daunting leagues.
This year is undoubtedly one of consolidation for Pecchia's men, a task they have so far performed manfully, keeping their noses above the relegation places. They currently sit 16th, a point above the drop, with Woyo starring in 14 of their 20 league outings so far.
The defender has gathered plenty of Serie A experience.
That battle for survival in Italy will undoubtedly serve him well as he prepares to start life with the Foxes, who themselves are fighting to preserve their Premier League status. Van Nistelrooy has been eager to stress over recent weeks that securing the ‘right people’ is just as important as quality players during this winter transfer window – with Coulibaly expected to compliment a close-knit squad all pulling in the same direction.
Although our new full-back won’t be in contention to feature against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, he’ll be hoping to showcase his abilities to us all soon, with Fulham also due in LE2 later this week, on Saturday, to conclude a three-game home run.
