Leicester City return to Sky Bet Championship action in need of points after two defeats in a row, while the Rams were also on the wrong side of the scoreline in their last outing, a 2-1 reverse at high-flying Middlesbrough.
This 109th meeting with Derby is a 12:30pm GMT kick-off on Saturday and, ahead of that clash, with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, we’ve taken at look at some of the numbers and the landmarks behind it…
Previous Encounters
In recent years, Leicester-Derby encounters have tilted in our favour. The last five league matches ended in four wins for the Foxes, including emphatic 4-1 triumphs at King Power Stadium in both December 2012 and January 2014, with David Nugent scoring braces on each occasion. The last league meeting at Pride Park – the stage this weekend – also ended positively for City, a 1-0 victory in August 2013, secured by a Lee Grant own goal.
The sides met twice, too, in the 2017 FA Cup Fourth Round, drawing 2–2 at Pride Park before Leicester won the replay 3-1 at King Power Stadium thanks to goals from Andy King (pictured above), Wilfred Ndidi and Demarai Gray. Our last League Cup encounter, on the other hand, came in 2013, as Anthony Knockaert and Danny Drinkwater struck in a 2-1 home success.
Landmark Moments & Last Times
Our most recent hat-trick against Derby dates back to February 1997, when Ian Marshall achieved the feat at Filbert Street. The Rams’ last treble, meanwhile, came much earlier, courtesy of Jack Bowers in 1932, and no Derby player has managed one in the post-war era. Leicester’s last penalty, on the other hand, arrived in the 4-1 win of January 2014 through Nugent, while Derby’s most recent spot-kick in the fixture was converted by Fabrizio Ravanelli at Pride Park in 2001. That game, though, was settled by Muzzy Izzet’s 90th minute penalty in Derby.
The last City own goal against Derby came from Ritchie de Laet in the 2014 home victory, although he did get one at the right end too that night. Derby’s last was from Darren Bent, who also scored for both sides in the 2017 FA Cup tie. The last Leicester debutant was Marcin Wasilewski in 2013, while Patrick Bamford made his Derby bow in 2014, and Neil Lennon was the last Fox to be dismissed in 2000. Deon Burton was sent off for Derby in 2001.
Played For Both & Top Scorers
Among the players to have played for both Leicester and Derby over the years are Curtis Davies, Martyn Waghorn, Paul Dickov, Matt Oakley, Robbie Savage, Steve Howard, Marc Edworthy, Peter Shilton, Michael Keane, Tom Lawrence and many others. Former Leicester goalkeeper Kevin Poole also became the oldest debutant ever to face the Foxes when he made his Derby debut in this fixture in 2005.
Leicester’s leading marksman is Fred Shinton, whose seven goals set the bar over a century ago, while Derby’s equivalent is Steve Bloomer, also with seven. Dean Sturridge, on the other hand, remains the only player to have conventionally scored for both clubs in league action, netting four times for the Rams and twice for the Foxes.
