It was worn for one season only. For the first time in 26 seasons, there was no sponsors logo on the front of the shirt. This decision was heavily influenced by a fans’ vote in January 2009 which had come down in favour of having a plain, classic shirt for the anniversary year.
There was, however, a sponsor’s name on the back of the shirt, provided by Jessops, the photographers.
There were also some minor changes to the Club’s crest. The dates 1884-2009 were added, together with a banner at the base of the crest with the legend ‘125 Years’. Also, white features were added to the fox head, which had been a single yellow colour since 1992, and a different font was used for the lettering surrounding the crest.
The shirt featured here was matchworn by Richie Wellens who, following his transfer to the Club in the close season, was a virtual ever-present that year.
The campaign that this shirt was worn saw the continuation of the recovery of the Club under Nigel Pearson. The Foxes were in a play-off position, competing for back-to-back promotions to the Premier League for most of the season, which culminated in a penalty shootout defeat in a thrilling two-legged play-off semi-final against Cardiff City.
There was a statistical oddity that season. In the two Championship fixtures against Bristol City, Matty Fryatt and Lloyd Dyer, wearing this shirt design, scored the only Leicester goals in the respective home and away fixtures, and both were in stoppage-time, as was the Robins’ at Ashton Gate.
