Leicester City in the Community is supporting the Green Football Campaign through sustainability projects aimed at protecting the environments where football is played and enjoyed
Local schools and community members are contributing to efforts to care for and protect outdoor spaces
The Green Football Campaign highlights that football does not only exist within stadiums; it thrives in everyday environments such as streets, parks and local green spaces that bring communities together and provide places to play the game.
However, these outdoor environments are increasingly at risk from extreme weather. The campaign therefore aims to protect and preserve the outdoor spaces where football lives.
Leicester City in the Community (LCitC) is supporting the campaign by continuing to deliver projects that promote sustainability and protect these vital community environments.
During the annual festive period, LCitC travels to The National Forest to plant trees in partnership with The National Forest Company and local schools located around the forest’s border.
This initiative not only enhances outdoor learning opportunities for children, but also contributes to the protection and expansion of grassroots spaces that may be vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather.
In December 2025, local pupils planted 300 trees, helping to improve both the quality and surface area of the forest.
Alongside this annual project, the Forest Foxes outdoor learning programme provides engaging opportunities for children, young people and adults in schools and community groups to connect with nature.
Forest School sessions are delivered to schools by LCitC Outdoor Learning Coaches, while both day trips and residential visits to The National Forest are organised for vulnerable children and young people.
Since the beginning of 2023, more than 1,500 children and 500 adults have taken part in these activities. Schools have reported that the programme has positively influenced student engagement, mental wellbeing and environmental awareness; outcomes that align with the ambitions of the Green Football Campaign.
Through initiatives that encourage younger generations to care for and protect the environment, Leicester City in the Community is helping local communities play an active role in defending the spaces where football lives.
