This shirt design was worn by City in a Full Members' Cup tie against top flight Charlton Athletic at Selhurst Park on 1 December, 1987. The Foxes won the match 2-1 after extra-time, with both goals scored by reserve midfielder Kevin Jobling. Charlton’s squad included Andy Peake, who had previously spent seven seasons at Filbert Street.
The Football League Full Members' Cup ran from 1985 until 1992. It was created for clubs from the top two divisions of the Football League to help compensate for the ban on English clubs competing in Europe. The competition was also known as the Simod Cup from 1987-1989 and the Zenith Data Systems Cup from 1989-1992.
City decided to enter this competition for the first time in the 87/88 season, which was the only campaign that this shirt design was worn. In August 1987, Walkers Crisps signed a two-year contract to become the Club’s main sponsors. Part of the agreement was to wear shirts featuring their name for all First Team and reserve matches. In the event, this shirt sponsorship lasted for 14 years.
After several seasons, this was the last Leicester shirt to be manufactured by Admiral. It featured thin, red piping bordering the blue stripe on the collar and sleeve. A small red panel was also added to the blue stripe on the white shorts.
The shirt illustrated here is a No.9 shirt and was match-worn by England Under-21s striker Mike Newell, who joined City from Luton Town in September 1987 for a Club record fee.
Players associated with this shirt design include, among others, Simon Morgan, Mark Venus, Robbie James, Russell Osman, Ian Wilson, Gary McAllister, Ali Mauchlen, Paul Ramsey, Paul Reid and Jari Rantanen.
