A Man City goal in either half, from Savinho and Erling Haaland, was the difference in LE2 as the reigning champions returned to winning ways for the first time in six outings. The hosts, meanwhile, sit uncomfortably in 18th place as we head into the New Year, but do so on the back of a spirited performance that could have warranted more.
It was always to be a difficult task for Leicester, despite their opponents' current form, as several players impressed in the final outing of the calendar year. Four days on from a Boxing Day loss to leaders Liverpool, Ruud van Nistelrooy made just two changes to the starting line-up, with Facundo Buonanotte coming in for Anfield goalscorer Jordan Ayew, who missed out through suspension, while City's No.9, captain Jamie Vardy, returned following injury.

To no surprise, Pep Guardiola's side arrived in the East Midlands with the intent of dominating possession, patiently waiting for gaps to appear, but it was the Foxes who had the first attempt on goal, when a swift counter attack resulted in Stephy Mavididi cutting inside and sending an effort past the far post. Two minutes later, Haaland put Jakub Stolarczyk to the test for the first time, turning a low Kevin De Bruyne cross towards goal, but the Polish shot-stopper was equal to it. An intense opening 15 minutes was rounded off by a Leicester penalty claim; Buonanotte sending a teasing ball in behind the opposition defence to the on-running Vardy, who was felled by Stefan Ortega in the box, but the linesman's flag was raised for offside amid the calls on Filbert Way.
After 20 minutes, the Citizens took the lead through Savinho after the Brazilian followed up on an initial long-range effort from Phil Foden, which was parried to the side by Stolarczyk, allowing the Man City forward to net from a tight angle. With a half-hour gone, the Foxes saw the perfect chance to equalise flash in front of them when a teasing ball into the box drifted a yard in front of Vardy then Buonanotte, and out of danger for the visiting side. Heading into the break a goal down, the final piece of action saw Leicester get the closest to levelling the scores, when Buonanotte's looping header from inside the box struck the upright, to the surprise of Ortega. But there were some promising signs from City, in particular the work of Bilal El Khannouss.

It was the Foxes who came out of the traps fastest in the second half, piling on the pressure in search of a way back into the game, with Vardy at the heart of it. First of all, he was a provider when his knock-down from a Conor Coady half-volley to the back post was turned goalwards by James Justin before Manuel Akanji cleared off the line. Minutes later, the 37-year-old had eyes at goal himself when an inch-perfect cross from Mavididi tempted the No.9, who didn't know whether to go with his foot or head, and sent a first time volley over the bar from close range.
Unfortunately, despite all the second-half dominance, it was the current champions who scored next, increasing their lead through a Haaland header. Quick play on the break saw Savinho turn provider, as he looped the ball into the box for the Norwegian to head home. As the clock continued to tick, Leicester's next best chance saw a Vardy header clip the crossbar following his connection with a Mavididi deep cross, who shortly afterwards paved the way for Will Alves to make his Premier League debut. A hard-fought effort which ultimately yielded no reward, van Nistelrooy will now look to recover in time for a New Year clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday (3pm GMT kick-off).
