The next couple of games see us challenge the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top two teams, starting with Manchester United this weekend, who have proved to be a formidable side this season under Marc Skinner.
During Thursday’s press conference at Belvoir Drive, Miquel identified the Foxes opponents and how we have been improving since our last meeting with them back in November… ‘Keep that momentum going’
Beating the Villans on Filbert Way.
Last time out, City beat Aston Villa by three goals to nil to record their third WSL success of the season. Hoping to keep that winning streak going, the Manager prefers to look at the bigger picture and seasonal targets within the Club.
“For me it is not a problem (winning consecutive games),” Miquel admitted. “Of course, you want to win a number of games across the season, but do they need to come all at once, no.
“Yes, it would be great for confidence but if it is spread across the 22 games then fine. It’s the second time we’ve won before a break but maybe this time we can keep that momentum going.
“For us to get more wins and positive performances would allow us to be further away from the bottom and as the season goes on, the less stress we want to have.”
‘Improve on our transitions’
Improving the front line.
As the season has gone on, Leicester have transformed into a more well-rounded team that have more prowess in attacking areas, helped by the return of injured players.
Stating that there are still points in our game to improve, Miquel confirmed she can see a difference following the winter break, and is not worried about the possession stats in games, but instead the chances created.
She added: “I’m not a Manager that has to have the ball. If we have it then we’ll try to keep it, but if we don’t then that’s not a problem.
“We’ll improve more and more on our transitions, and I think we can still do better, but it has been proven in many leagues that teams without the ball can be better defensively and very efficient on transitions.
“Having the ball is nice but if you’re not dangerous with it, then what’s the point in having the ball.”
‘Threats can come from anywhere’
Miquel worked with the Man Utd shot-stopper in France.
Second in the standings with only one loss this season, coming against current champions Chelsea, the Red Devils will be a tough opponent, especially in their own backyard.
Heading into the fixture with confidence, the former Stade de Reims Manager identified ‘keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce as one of the league’s best, having worked with the 28-year-old in France.
“She (Tullis-Joyce) is a goalkeeper I know well because of our time together in France, so first of all congratulations to her. I think she is the best ‘keeper in the league and she’s proving it.
“But we know her well so we can work on her weaknesses. We know we can score against all of them teams; we scored against Chelsea and Man City in the cup game so we’re getting better offensively.
“We know that they have threats and that they can come from any player so we will do our best to give them trouble when we attack.”
