  • Leicester City in the Community coach shares his story ahead of Friday’s dedicated Heartwize fixture
  • Adam Martin saved the life of one of his walking football participants in 2020
  • He was named our Community Hero ahead of our FA Cup Final victory over Chelsea at Wembley
In 2020, during a routine walking football session, his instincts and training were put to the ultimate test when one of his participants collapsed on the pitch, unresponsive.
In a moment where every second counted, Adam sprang into action, performing CPR until emergency services arrived. Thanks to his quick thinking and life-saving skills, that participant was given another chance.
Fast forward to today, and Adam’s story remains as relevant as ever as we prepare to celebrate the work of Heartwize at our game against Brentford.
The Lutterworth-based charity, who are dedicated to CPR education, have trained more than 60,000 people and are one of the Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation’s partner charities for the 2024/25 season.
For Adam, it’s a cause close to him, as his actions that day weren’t just instinctive - they were the result of CPR training, something he believes should be accessible to everyone.
He said: “I was refereeing a walking football session at St Margaret’s Pastures Sports Centre, and after about five minutes of the game, one of the participants told me the goalkeeper had collapsed. I thought at first he was having a fit so I ran over to him and as soon as I arrived, I could tell his chest wasn’t rising and falling.
“My CPR training then instantly kicked in, so I called for help, dialled 999 and shouted at someone to get me a defibrillator as I started to administer CPR.

“Looking back, it was all very automatic. You don’t have time to think about it because you have to do something. I wouldn’t say it was surreal; it was more of a case of knowing I had to help this gentleman as best as I could – and luckily I did.”
Adam’s heroism was recognised on one of our most iconic days when he was chosen as our Community Hero ahead of the 2021 Emirates FA Cup Final.
He led the Foxes out onto the pitch at Wembley, and his story was shared with the world - a reminder that football’s impact stretches far beyond the 90 minutes.
“I can’t stress the importance of CPR training enough”, he added. “It’s a vital skill because you just never know when you might find yourself in that situation, it could be in your workplace, a sports venue, when you’re walking down the street, or anywhere really.
“I would encourage everyone to get themselves CPR trained. It’s so worthwhile and you may just save someone’s life.
“The support the Club is showing Heartwize through the VS Foundation is incredible. It goes to show the power of football and it’s fantastic what the players have all done recently by purchasing defibrillators for the charity.”
Later today, supporters will have the opportunity to donate, speak directly with Heartwize volunteers about the importance of CPR, and learn more about how this training can save lives.
Look out for special matchday activities around King Power Stadium, including bucket collections, demonstrations and more.
Every donation goes directly towards expanding Heartwize’s vital CPR and defibrillator training. Text CPR plus the amount you wish to donate to 70460 to support their work. For example, to donate £5 text CPR 5 To 70460.
