Leicester City defeated West Ham United 3-1 in Tuesday's Premier League clash
Bilal El Khannouss scored and assisted during the Foxes' home victory
He spoke after the game about what it meant to score his first for the Club
The 3-1 success in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge of the Club was the perfect way to begin the Dutchman’s tenure. The Manager’s words before the game, as well as the short time the squad had with him on the training pitch, proved influential in Tuesday night’s result, according to El Khannouss, who set up Jamie Vardy’s opener just one minute and 38 seconds into the contest. “It was incredible today,” the midfielder said after full-time on Filbert Way. “We had a big feeling before the game with the speech from the coach. We knew that he would bring a new dynamic into the group.
The pair combined to break through West Ham early on.
“We only trained one time with the whole group. Two days ago, we trained with a smaller group who didn’t play on Saturday. We directly felt what the Manager wanted and that’s what we worked on today coming into the game.
“The way they wanted to play, we knew that it wouldn’t be easy, but we put in a lot of intensity from the start and we scored in the second minute, so we showed what we are: this is Leicester City.”
The Morocco international also provided the second of the evening, sliding in to meet Kasey McAteer’s cross and score his first league goal for the Club, before celebrating in front of the Foxes faithful, with whom he already feels a close connection to. “When you are young, when you start playing football, you are dreaming about this competition and playing and scoring and assisting in it,” the summer signing said, explaining his emotions after the goal. “It’s the best competition in the world, so it was an incredible feeling to score and to assist Jamie on the first goal.
Celebrating after full-time.
“It’s something I always had. I’m always good with the fans. My previous club was the same and I’m close to them because without them, you cannot win games. You need their help for winning games, they helped us today and we are very happy to give this [result] back.”
The Foxes’ first win in six has boosted morale around King Power Stadium, opening up a four-point gap to the bottom three ahead of Wednesday evening’s fixtures, but El Khannouss acknowledged that there is still a lot more work to be done in the coming weeks, as the festive period comes into focus.
“When you beat West Ham 3-1 at home, it gives confidence to everybody,” the 20-year-old admitted. “But you have to stay humble, you have to keep going.
“We are very happy with the win, but I know it’s only the start of something big. We have to keep working for the next game. We are still in December and we have a big month. We have to keep working and there are a lot of games to go.”
