Despite falling behind to the south Yorkshire club at King Power Stadium, a second-half turnaround saw the Foxes notch up three Sky Bet Championship points as our 2025/26 campaign got up and running in thrilling fashion. Nathaniel Chalobah had handed the visitors an early advantage before Jannik Vestergaard levelled up soon after half-time. City kept knocking on the door and once Barry Bannan was shown a second yellow card, the spaces opened up further and from Bilal El Khannouss’ corner, Wout Faes headed home the decisive goal.
“We know this season is going to be a long hard season and every team deserves respect,” the full-back commented following full-time on Filbert Way. "They were going to be up for it, no matter what.
“Their pre-season has been a bit stop-start and there is a lot going on at their club but they’re professionals at the end of the day and they want to do their job on the pitch to give themselves the best chance.
“But we have belief in ourselves as a team that no matter what the situation is, we can come out with three points. We showed that resilience today. That’s a big thing moving forwards.”
Taking real control in the second period, Leicester had to wait for the opportunities to arrive, only taking the lead in the 87th minute of the contest, but Justin knew those chances would come and the last-gasp nature of the winning goal made it an even sweeter victory.
“We changed the shape a little bit and it was just about staying calm,” the 27-year-old explained, providing insight into the half-time message from Martí Cifuentes. “The game was a really long 100 minutes and there’s lots of time to score that first goal.
“As soon as you do that, the momentum and the crowd gets on top and then there’s only one thing happening from there. We’re doing a lot of work on set pieces and Hughesy (Andrew Hughes) drills it into us every other day.
“It was straight off the training ground with the goals. It gives the crowd and the dressing room a good feeling moving on to the next game.”
Captaining the side for the first time was a proud moment for the defender, who is now one of the most experienced heads in the Foxes dressing room.
“It’s a big one for me personally and I’m striving so far in this leadership role,” he added. “There’s a lot of us in the group and it’s an honour to captain the Club.”
