  • Leicester City overcame Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at King Power Stadium
  • The Foxes came from behind to win in our Sky Bet Championship opener
  • Martí Cifuentes gave his reaction following full-time, pleased to start off positively
  • Goals from Jannik Vestergaard and Wout Faes saw us claim three points
Late drama saw substitute Wout Faes head home Bilal El Khannouss’ corner in the 87th minute to see the Foxes claim all three points in our Sky Bet Championship opener. Earlier, fellow centre-back Jannik Vestergaard had cancelled out Nathaniel Chalobah’s deadlock-breaker on Filbert Way.
Summarising our opening day victory, City’s Manager felt the love from the Blue Army during his first competitive match in charge. On the pitch, meanwhile, we had to work hard to come from behind against the Owls.
It's a quick turnaround for Cifuentes and his players though now, with Leicester heading to Yorkshire to face Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening (7:45pm GMT kick-off).
“First of all, we’re happy, because it’s never easy to win football games,” Cifuentes expressed post-match. “Today was a demonstration of how difficult it is in the first game of the season when there are a lot of emotions.

“It was a game of two halves, but it was important to start in the right way. It’s a very important day for everyone; the fans have been fantastic since my arrival. To start my first competitive game here at home with a victory is special.
“It’s always about creating this feeling and I want them to understand that we’re going to need all of them during the season. It’s never easy to win no matter what the vision and situation is.
“Today is also important because of the impact of all the players coming from the bench. Everyone will be important. Starting by winning at home is always a very good feeling. It’s very important to create momentum.
“We have to make sure that we start with good confidence and understand that whatever we achieve today, it’s gone and we will have a new challenge on Wednesday and we need to get ready for it.”
Dominant in terms of possession, shots and chances created, we had to be patient for the openings to arrive, with the Manager’s message at half-time all about refining the approach in the final third, finding a way through soon after the interval, before being roared on to victory by the home support.

“Football is about achieving, not about deserving,” the Spaniard explained. “It doesn’t matter if you shoot 30 times, or shoot just once, the important thing is scoring. We created a lot and put a lot of pressure on. In my opinion, the ‘keeper was probably the best player, but we should be a bit more clinical to be better as a team.
“In the first 15 minutes of the first half, unfortunately we couldn’t create the momentum. Definitely we had to improve some things from a tactical point of view. We needed to move the ball quicker, we needed to improve certain positioning in the way we attack.
“It’s true that in the week we spoke about Sheffield Wednesday perhaps playing four or five (in defence) and in the end, they started with a back five. We had to create more space with speed on the ball to move positions side to side.
“And then it’s a little bit about understanding what is needed because mentally it was not easy. We spoke during the week that this could happen – that they could take the lead and we should be strong enough mentally to keep going.
“I think the guys showed that in the second half. We tried again and I think that we did. In that sense as well the fans were really good helping us to create and keep pushing. In the end I think it was a deserved win.”
