Jamie Vardy paid a visit to two Leicester schools last week as part of his final community visit with the Club
The Foxes legend hit a huge milestone on Sunday, scoring his 200th goal in what was also his 500th and final appearance for us
Before the weekend, he dropped in to surprise two lucky competition winners, whose schools took part in an inspirational art challenge
Isabelle and Ellis were chosen from hundreds of entries, with students creating artwork around themes like resilience, determination, and hard work
As part of a city-wide competition, children were invited to create art that reflected qualities Vardy himself has lived by to overcome the challenges which life may have handed them.
Selected from an overwhelming number of entries, the Leicester City icon was moved by the winners’ creativity and honesty, after bidding an emotional goodbye to the Club at the weekend. On Friday, in the lead-up to his goalscoring Foxes bow, Vardy made surprise visits to the winning pupils – turning a normal school assembly into a lifelong memory.
Speaking afterwards, Vardy said: "It’s unbelievable to see the smiles on the kids’ faces. I’ve been looking through the entries over the last few days, I’ve got a big booklet of them. Some of the stories are heartbreaking, some are unbelievable, but all of them are inspiring.
"Whether it’s donations to the hospital, or coming out to schools and doing work with them, stuff like this is huge for the Club. I think that’s what brings everyone together as a Club. You can see it really is for everyone. It’s a full-on community Club."
First, at Montrose School in Aylestone, he met Isabelle, whose personal letter spoke of finding strength through schoolwork and after-school choir lessons during turbulent times in her life. “I would love it if you came to visit my school,” she said in her letter. “And so would my classmates. Especially my nana as she has you as her screensaver!”
Jamie Vardy gives back to our community one final time, with a very special surprise visit to two primary schools.
To congratulate Isabelle, Vardy himself gate-crashed morning assembly to present her with a signed copy of her submission, as recognition not only for the quality of her work, but also the meaning behind it.
Then, at Caldecote Community Primary School in Braunstone, Ellis was celebrated for his powerful mood board, which bravely described his life with arthrogryposis – which affects his joints – and how it wouldn’t stop him learning to swim and walk with his standing frame.
His artwork stood out not only for its creativity, but for its honesty and authenticity. “Surgeries are hard,” he wrote on his artwork, accompanied by pictures of him in hospital. “But every time, I get stronger and stronger! I bounce back, ready for anything!”
At each school, Vardy’s visit was a surprise treat as the end of the term nears. He also took time to answer questions and pose for photos ahead of Sunday’s emotional send-off at King Power Stadium, when he marked his 500th appearance with his 200th goal for the Club.
Having climbed from non-league at the age of 25 to later become a Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield and two-time Championship winner – overcoming many hurdles along the way – Vardy’s tale is a reminder to anyone, of any age, that anything is possible.
It was that hook which the challenge was pinned on, leading to hundreds of fantastic entries being received over the past month. Leicester City would like to thank Isabelle, Ellis and all the children who contributed for the hard work they put into the competition!
