Peterborough United beat us 3-1 in Sky Bet League One on Saturday
Emil Riis scored our consolation after three first-half goals from Posh
Captain on the day John Lundstram reacted to the home defeat
The Posh came away from King Power Stadium with a 3-1 victory, courtesy of first-half goals from Owura Edwards, Harry Leonard and Ethan Williams. Emil Riis pulled one back for Russell Martin’s side, who were unable to claw back the deficit having given ourselves a mountain to climb early on.
Making better decisions under pressure is required to turn our form around, Lundstram believes, with another frustrating outcome leaving us 17th in Sky Bet League One, eight matches into the season.
“It’s a tough one to take,” the midfielder admitted, talking post-match on Filbert Way. “I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. Every time we seem to concede an attack or a counter-attack, the ball just seems to be going in our net at the minute.
“We get similar chances down the other end and don’t put it away at the minute like other teams are. It’s a frustrating one because we’re really good in parts and really poor in parts as well. As players, we’ve only got ourselves to blame.
“We’re the same as everyone else. We go in and discuss how he is going inside and cutting in and putting it in the top corner and the other goals as well. It’s so frustrating because we know how good this group is.
“It just feels like when we come to a game, we’re so good from Monday to Friday and we just turn up on a Saturday and people just go into their shells a little bit. Sometimes, when you’re under a little bit of pressure, and you’ve got a 50-50 decision to make on the ball.
“Sometimes it becomes a 70-30 decision not in your favour and that little bit of indecision can cause some anxiety. There’s a little bit of that in the squad, which is down to us. We just need to try and get that out. We’re trying our best to put things right and I’m sure we will. We’re only seven games in and it’s a long season.
“It’s a new group with 16 new players, a new Manager and we’re all just trying to gel together. When it comes off, it’s fantastic, but unfortunately when we lose the ball and we get a counter-attack, at the moment, things just seem to be going in our net.
“We go down the other end and get similar types of chances and aren’t putting it away. Today we had loads of chances again. It might not be a shot, but we’re in really good positions and the final decision isn’t great. Things like that, we need more of a cutting edge on.”
An experienced head within the dressing room, the Everton academy graduate, who captained us at the weekend, can play a role in helping to improve confidence and morale among the squad, having gone through similar periods in the past where nothing seems to be going in our favour.
“I think every single footballer has had highs and lows; it’s just part of the game,” the 32-year-old continued. “Ninety-nine per cent of footballers will have had more downs than highs. At the minute, we’re in a little bit of a down and today was a big down for us because we know we can do better.
“We’re at home in front of our support, we should be coming out here and putting in a better performance than that, and that’s on us as players. There’s frustration, but when it comes off, we look really good.
“At times, just little mistakes we’re getting punished for, which is unfortunate because sometimes you get the rub of the green, play rubbish and you win 1-0. We just need to be more tight defensively and all stick together. We all need each other now.”
