The 25-year-old, arriving from Dutch giants Feyenoord on a season-long loan, is our second signing of the summer, coming in on Deadline Day.
We’ve taken a closer look at his career to date, which has seen the former Argentina Under-23s international travel across the Americas and into Europe before moving to Leicestershire this week…
Born in Oncativo, a city located within the province of Córdoba in central Argentina, Carranza began his footballing journey at Club Atlético Banfield, honing skills in the youth team of the Buenos Aires outfit.
A call-up to the first team set-up at El Taladro soon beckoned and his impressive debut season included a return of four goals in 14 Argentine Primera División matches at the age of just 17.
Scoring a first senior goal on just his second start, ‘JC’ looked at home right away, seemingly not fazed by the level he had stepped into and the intense scrutiny which surrounds the top level of football in his native country.
Also gaining experiences in the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores – the jewel in the crown of South American football – the following 18/19 season saw Carranza managed by legendary Argentine talisman Hernan Crespo, adding another five goals to his tally.
After a final half season with Banfield, on loan from new Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, the striker introduced himself to Herons fans by netting twice on his MLS debut.
Philadelphia Union, his next destination two years on from moving to the USA, would provide a fruitful period in front of goal for the centre forward at a crucial stage of his career.
Scoring hat-tricks during home and away wins over D.C. United, Carranza managed 20 goal contributions in 31 MLS outings across 2022, including six assists, outlining his pedigree as an all-round marksman.
Playing a key role in Union’s route to the MLS Cup Play-Off Final, 2023 was similarly impressive. Another 14 in 31 mirrored the previous MLS campaign, adding a further eight assists in league competition.
A one-in-two ratio continued the following year, as well as scoring four goals in just three CONCACAF Champions League appearances. Although injury ended that season prematurely, Carranza’s performances sparked interest from the Netherlands.
His time in Pennsylvania had indeed come to an end in the summer of 2024, beginning a new chapter at Feyenoord. Scoring at San Siro in the UEFA Champions League a clear highlight of his maiden season in Europe, it sealed a spot in the prestigious competition’s last-16 stage.
Also playing against the likes of Inter Milan, Manchester City and Benfica, four Eredivisie goals in 24 appearances back on Dutch soil helped the Rotterdam club secure a third-place finish.
Now bringing further firepower to King Power Stadium, City’s promotion push is aided by the addition of a proven centre forward.
