Leicester City defeated Ipswich Town 2-0 at King Power Stadium on Sunday
Kasey McAteer scored his first Premier League goal in the victory
Jamie Vardy had earlier netted his 200th strike for the Club on his final appearance
The Academy graduate, who was making his 17th appearance of the season in the top flight, rifled home the second of the afternoon after Jamie Vardy scored a landmark 200th goal during his 500th and final game for the Club.
And although the occasion was centred around the legendary City striker, it was a special moment for the Northampton-born winger to score.
“It’s hard to think about myself on a day like this but I’m over the moon to get my first Premier League goal,” the 23-year-old beamed after the game. “It’s crazy. I can be proud for myself but today is not about me.
“It’s what dreams are made of and to do it at this Club is a dream come true. I thought it wasn’t going to be my day when I hit the post but I’m so glad I got that chance later on.
“Wilf (Wilfred Ndidi) laid it off and the only place I could really hit it was near post. The far post was a bit cut off so I thought I’d have a strike and it’s flew in. That feeling was amazing. I’m really happy I could put it away.
“With the season that we’ve had, it’s bittersweet today but just to say that I’ve got on the scoresheet today in the Premier League, I’m really proud. My family were all here today and to do it in front of them is what I dreamt of as a kid.”
The perfect way for Vardy, the Club’s greatest-ever to bow out in front of the Blue Army at King Power Stadium, McAteer also spoke about the influence City’s No.9 has had on his own career since breaking into the First Team.
“I don’t think I need to speak about what Vards has done for this Football Club, this city and football in general,” he added. “From where he’s come from and the drive he’s had, it’s inspirational. For a boy like myself coming into the Club, it’s always been Jamie Vardy at the Club and I’ve not known any different.
“To say that I’ve played alongside him is a true honour and I can be filled with pride that I’ve been his team-mate and such a small part of his journey and his amazing career. From all of us at Leicester, we all wish him the best for whatever he does next.
“He’s the best player who has ever played for this Club and everyone is going to miss him, that’s for sure. It’s Vards’ day and everyone can celebrate him and send him off the way he deserves to be sent off.
“They speak for themselves, the numbers. We knew he’d score today, it was a big day made for him. To get one more [goal], there was never any doubt that he was going to and when he did you could tell with the celebrations, we were so proud of him to get that. That was driven into us all week and making it as special as we can.”
