It was a tough afternoon for LCFC Women, who had to face the current UEFA Women's Champions League winners just days after regrouping from the international break. We were wearing poppies on our shirts on Filbert Way, showing our support for the Royal British Legion's Remembrance period. Alessia Russo opened the scoring before a Sari Kees own goal and Stina Blackstenius' brace for the Gunners, while Noémie Mouchon come off the bench to get her second goal for the Foxes.
It comes as a first defeat since September for Rick Passmoor's side, who made four changes to the XI which beat London City Lionesses last time out in League Cup action, with Janina Leitzig, Hannah Cain, Shannon O'Brien and Julie Thibaud all coming into the starting line-up.
A high-flying opponent
Up against the champions of Europe.
The side from north London were always heading into the game as favourites, having won three of their opening six games in the WSL, and made a quick start, breaking the deadlock through Russo seven minutes in.
Although were were trying to stabilise ourselves into the game, it was the Gunners to score next and increase their lead just after the half-hour mark when a low ball into the box was unfortunately turned goalwards by Kees.
Before City had the chance to regroup at the half-time stage, Arsenal had a third through Blackstenius, but the first '45 wasn't without some impressive saves from Leitzig, who notably kept Beth Mead out from close range.
Arsenal's only goal during the second half came from Blackstenius once again, who fired into the roof of the net from a tight angle just minutes after Mouchon's strike up the other end, confirming the win for the travelling side.
Mouchon makes an impact
Mouchon scored in the second half.
Passmoor made three changes at the break in an attempt to rescue something from the game, introducing Emily van Egmond, and forward pair Hlín Eiríksdóttir and Mouchon.
The latter had an immediate impact, driving forward into the opposition half, similar to her goal against Everton a few weeks ago, turning inside and out before finding herself with a shooting opportunity, which found the body of Daphne van Domselaar
But inside the final five minutes, City's No.9 found herself in a similar situation, where she was able to use a quick turn of pace to glide past the Arsenal defence, and this time made no mistake, firing low under the 'keeper.
Looking forward
Our next two games are on the road.
Following Sunday's loss to one of the WSL's heavyweights, we now face two crucial fixtures in the league which could help determine our position come the end of the season.
Up next are two trips south, first heading to East London to face bottom-placed West Ham United, who are without a point from their first seven games, for a 12pm GMT kick-off next Sunday.
After that, we head to the Amex Stadium to take on Brighton & Hove Albion, who sit three spots above the Foxes in seventh - and tickets for our upcoming away games can be found online.
