LCFC Women held Aston Villa to a goalless draw last weekend
Foxes full-back Heather Payne played the full 90 at Villa Park
The defender was proud of her team-mates' performances
Sunday’s draw was our second clean sheet in six outings this season, and Payne believes this is a positive to build on in future games. Going to a side just above us in the table, it’s always important not to lose, although the former Everton defender wants to start seeing these draws turn into wins.
“We always knew it was going to be tough going away to Villa and they’ve really picked up on their form from last season. It could’ve gone either way but it’s good getting a point on the road,” Payne stated.
“We always want to go for three points, and we’re disappointed to not get a win, but a point is a fair assessment.
“Jani [Leitzig] was brilliant today, pulled off some amazing saves which kept us in the game, and I think the back five, all the way up to the front line, put in a big shift today.
“We got a point today, but I think we need to be disappointed with a point. We’ve started better than a lot of people expected and if we keep going and building, we’ll do well.”
Heather has made five appearances this term since joining City in the summer.
Talking about the positive energy, and stability, that Rick Passmoor has added to the group since his announcement as Manager, the Irish full-back hopes that we can continue to prove the critics wrong, ahead of heading south to face London City Lionesses in the Subway Women's League Cup this weekend.
“Rick has a positive mentality, and wants us to leave the background noise behind, so we just need to keep going,” Payne continued.
“We’ve all got used to Rick [Passmoor] being our Manager now and he brings a positive attitude towards the team and the city and it’s nice to have that consistency.
“Next week, it’s not a midweek fixture but our one game for the week, so obviously you want to play well and stay in the cup, but London City are a good team, and it will be a good test for us.”
