Jutta Rantala’s Finland beat Iceland 1-0 on the opening day of UEFA Women’s EURO 2025
Hlín Eiríksdóttir started in the match for the beaten side
Janice Cayman and Sari Kees were handed a first-round defeat by Italy
Wales lost 3-0 to Netherlands as Olivia Clark and Hannah Cain started in Switzerland
This summer’s competition started on Wednesday evening, and a Leicester City presence was immediate with Hlín Eiríksdóttir named in the starting line-up between Iceland and Finland.
Rantala, who missed the majority of the recent Barclays Women’s Super League season with a knee injury, would have to wait until the 78th minute for her introduction, at which point her nation were already in the lead thanks to a second-half goal from Katariina Kosola; that would be enough to determine the scoreline.
Iceland were beaten on the opening day by Finland.
The result keeps Finland in the hunt for progression from Group A, with a Sunday afternoon test (5pm kick-off) against Norway up next as Iceland face the hosts three hours later.
Belgium’s start to the tournament against Italy on Thursday ended in a 1-0 defeat; Janice Cayman, who is the nation’s most-capped player, was named in defence alongside Sari Kees.
Arianna Caruso’s fantastic strike on the brink of half-time disrupted the Red Flames rhythm, who were not able to fight back as their focus turns to Spain on Monday afternoon (5pm kick-off).
This year's competition comes from Switzerland.
The final couple of Foxes to feature in the first round of games were Olivia Clark and Hannah Cain, who had the honour of starting for Wales in their first-ever Euros match.
Rallied by the backing off the travelling Welsh fans, they started well, digging in deep and looking to break, but Vivianne Miedema’s late first half goal changed the layout for the second half, with Rhian Wilkinson’s side having to come out in search of a goal.

This opened the chance for Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts to score a second and then a third before an hour had been played, putting the game out of reach of the Dragons.
France are up next for them in Group D, when the two sides meet on Wednesday evening (8pm kick-off) – stay tuned to LCFC Women’s social media accounts for the latest news on how all our Foxes fare in the penultimate round of group stage fixtures!
