Hlín Eiríksdóttir, Janice Cayman and Hannah Cain score at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025
Jutta Rantala, Sari Kees and Olivia Clark all featured in final group stage fixtures
The competition heads to the knockout stages as our City stars bow out
Leicester’s international stars may all be heading home after the first stage of this summer’s tournament in Switzerland, but they do so having made an impact, with three of them finding the net over the past few days.
Eiríksdóttir the first to do so on Thursday evening against Norway, when she came off the bench to score just 13 minutes later; although the 4-3 loss denied Iceland a point at the competition.
A late winner for Belgium.
The same evening saw Jutta Rantala make her third substitute appearance for Finland, who were eliminated from Group A by the hosts in heartbreaking fashion. A Natalia Kuikka penalty 20 minutes from time looked enough, but an equaliser from Riola Xhemaili in stoppage time sent Switzerland through instead.
Friday evening saw Sari Kees and Cayman, Belgium’s most capped player, line up for the Red Flames, with their fate already decided. But they fought hard to end on a high and it was City’s No.11 who was the hero at Stade de Tourbillon, netting a 96th-minute winner.
Our involvement in the European finals came to an close on Sunday night, when Wales faced England with a big task required to have any chance of qualifying from Group D.
Celebrating a goal against the Lionesses.
Olivia Clark was back in the starting XI while Cain had to wait until the 65th minute for her chance but that didn’t stop her showcasing her talent, when she pounced on an Jess Fishlock's pass and rifled in a left-footed shot past Hannah Hampton.
The Lionesses would go on to win the game, scoring six in the process as they move on to the next round but as the Red Dragons depart, the past few weeks have been a proud moment, nonetheless, for our Welsh Foxes to represent at their Euros debut.
