Coach Andy King reflects on Leicester City’s 2-1 win over OH Leuven
The game was contested over 180 minutes, enabling three different City line-ups to get up to an hour’s action
The fitness gains will stand us in good stead for the new season, says King

Takahiro Akimoto’s own goal and Jordan Ayew’s strike straight from a corner came either side of Jovan Mijatovic’s equaliser from the half-way line as City made it two wins from two this summer.

With four phases of 45 minutes allowing us to field three different line-ups, each benefiting from an hour of action, it was a worthwhile exercise for King and Leicester.

“It was a really good,” the First Team Coach said. “Obviously it was a long afternoon. First of all, the fans who stayed until the end, they deserve a round of applause. It was nearly four hours with the sun baking down on them. I know the lads really appreciated that.

“That pushes the lads, so that was really good. It’s minutes in the legs. Victor [Kristiansen] was the only one we lost, but it sounds like it's not too bad.

“To get 29 players through an hour of this stage in pre-season is really good. Some of the performances, some of the stuff I saw, I’m really, really pleased with. There’s some other stuff where we have to be better.

“We know that, but in terms of a two-week block, what they’ve given us has really been top-level. To also get used to winning games and picking up momentum, we say pre-season is not about the result, which it isn’t, but you want momentum going into the season.

“It gets the lads feeling good about themselves when you score goals. Today there were some top, top bits and some others we need to be better with.”
