The goals were flowing for the Foxes this week at JobServe Community Stadium as we started the League Cup group stage in perfect fashion, with a win over WSL2 opposition.
Shannon O'Brien cancelled out Ruby Seaby's opener for the hosts, before the top flight quality came through in abundance from the travelling City side during the second period, who saw out the win with goals from Asmita Ale, Rosella Ayane, Sammy Kaczmar and Jutta Rantala.
Nine changes from Chelsea
Rick Passmoor made nine changes from the side that narrowly lost out to Chelsea at the weekend, with Olivia Clark getting her first start of the season between the sticks, while Arsenal loanee Cecily Wellesley-Smith debuted in defence, partnered alongside Chantelle Swaby.
Academy graduates Nelly Las and Simone Sherwood were in from the start while there was a fresh return for forwards Rantala and Noémie Mouchon, who hasn't featured for City in competitive action since 6 October 2024, missing the rest of the last campaign with an ACL injury.
Ayane was also given her first start following an impressive cameo at Kingsmeadow three days ago, with O'Brien lining up on the other flank, returning to the team after her suspension, netting a first half goal in Essex.
Immediate impact from Azzy
If O'Brien's goal was 45 minutes in the making, then Ale's was about 45 seconds; the full-back was a second-half introduction for Swaby, who is still building back to full fitness.
Deployed at left-back, the former Tottenham defender's first involvement came in the Ipswich penalty area, picking up a pass into the box before calmly finding the net.
Her League Cup strike is her first for the Club, as was Ayane's, who found the net six minutes later, on her maiden start for the Foxes, marking a promising opening chapter for the Moroccan international.
Kaczmar impresses
There's no doubt from anyone in attendance that the award for the best goal of the night goes to Kaczmar, who found the net in extraordinary fashion. Only moments after coming on, the Academy attacker drove forward with confidence before sending a powerful effort past Laura Hartley, clipping the underside of the bar on the way through.
The game was rounded off by Rantala five minutes from time, when the Finnish forward, who has spent the majority of the last year in the treatment room nursing a knee injury, converted to make it five. An emotional moment in her return, our 23/24 top goalscorer fired in a left footed effort to confirm the win against the Tractor Girls.
That makes it one win from one in Group D, as we push for the knockout stages of the competition, as well as building confidence in the squad ahead of a crucial WSL clash this Sunday, against Tottenham Hotspur.
Leicester currently top the group on goal difference, as Crystal Palace were beaten by London City Lionesses, who we face in matchday two of the competition next month.
