Rick Passmoor believes the loss won’t define our season in the WSL
Leicester weren’t handed an easy task to deal with when the fixture list came out, with an early trip to Leigh Sports Village to face off against the Red Devils, who qualified for European football last term.
Up against the elements as well, City failed to get to grips with United’s prowess on the pitch and fell to a four-goal defeat, but in his post-match interview, Passmoor believes you have to look past the scoreline to get a true reflection of the game. City lost out to Man Utd on the opening day of the WSL season.
“The players, in terms of their professionalism, and direction in terms of play has been first class,” our Interim Manager explained. “The staff as well have been first class.
“Today I was looking at process, it doesn’t define our season. We’re disappointed with the end outcome, but we’ll review the game in terms of our style of play and where we can improve.
“I’m pleased with how players have taken on our ideas and tried to create solutions in their play, but of course this is only the start and there’s much to learn.”
Olivia was one of four debutants on Sunday afternoon.
Going into more detail about the approach and why the Foxes were left so open to the hosts' attack, Passmoor believes a half-time substitution helped us regain a little more control and composure of the football.
“Sometimes we dropped a bit too early and created too many gaps for Man Utd to exploit,” he continued. “And then in possession, we’ve been working on composure in training; linking the play and giving support, so we need to continue working on those basics.
“We used the substitution at half-time (Olivia McLoughlin for Shannon O’Brien) to give us more strength in the midfield and it was about backing the players to trust the setup and their own skill. It wasn’t really until we got tired legs in the last 10 that we got overrun by their quality in the pitch.”
A first outing for Nelly since signing a pro deal.
Impressed with the 45 minute cameo from Olivia McLoughlin, who signed a permanent deal from Rangers on Transfer Deadline Day, another positive highlighted was the appearance from Academy graduate, Nelly Las.
Passmoor added: “I thought Liv [McLoughlin] came on and did really well, as did Nelly [Las], which shows a clear message to the Academy that the pathway is there to the First Team.
“We’ll get back on the training ground at the start of next week to make sure we’re ready to go again.”
