Birmingham City host the Foxes in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday
Hamza Choudhury (knee) is out but Oliver Skipp has returned to training
Jannik Vestergaard could also feature after missing last weekend’s defeat
Caleb Okoli (suspension) won’t be involved but four new signings are in contention
Leicester City head to St. Andrew’s at Knighthead Park for Saturday’s 3:01pm GMT kick-off aiming to reverse a run of two straight Sky Bet Championship defeats.
Ahead of this weekend’s Midlands clash, First Team Coach Andy King spoke with the media, providing an update on the fitness of several recent absentees.
Choudhury was forced off during the first half of our defeat to Charlton Athletic last time out, with King awaiting news on the severity of the knee injury which is likely to keep him out throughout February.
“Hamza won’t be available,” he confirmed in Thursday morning’s pre-match press conference. “It was obviously a big blow for us on Saturday. You could see how low on numbers we were.
“To lose Caleb [Okoli] (to a red card) and then Hamza in the first half, that’s those two windows where we can only make one more set of changes. It probably compounded what was a difficult day. He’s going to be out for a little while, I think.
“He’s gone down to London to see a specialist. We’re not too sure on the timeframe but it certainly won’t be this month. It’s his knee and knees can be really bad. I don’t think it’s that far down the line.”
Jannik Vestergaard and Skipp were both sidelined against the Addicks and, with Skipp already back in training, Vestergaard is also in contention to return to the squad. It could provide a timely boost, given fellow centre-back Caleb Okoli’s suspension.
“We’ll see,” King explained. “He (Vestergaard) is trying to manage it. He’s going to be outside today and we’ll see how it goes. He knows the situation and we’re really short in defensive areas, especially now Caleb is suspended.
“He’s trying everything he can but we’re not going to put people out there who aren’t going to be able to function properly. We’ll have to see how he goes today and tomorrow and then see where he’s at.
“Skippy is back. It’s obviously a big boost for us. He’s been an important player this season and another senior body. Last weekend we were young. It’s important for us to have him back. We’re all good apart from that.”
A first session for our new January recruits, as we build up to Saturday's clash with Birmingham City.
Jamaal Lascelles, Joe Aribo, Divine Mukasa and Dujuan Richards have come in for the remainder of the season, with King ‘hopeful’ that all four can be part of the squad against the Blues.
“They have got to come in and be ready,” the 37-year-old added. “I don’t think we’re in a situation where we have 20 fit senior players and we can bed people in over a period of time. The reality of our situation is that we’re going to need them to contribute. That’s why we brought them in.
“It would be silly for us to rule them out for any period of time and say ‘you need to be up to speed’. They’ve not played loads. The two young ones haven’t played much senior football, they’ve not played many minutes. The two older lads haven’t been playing many minutes at their clubs, which is why they are available.
“But, ultimately, we need them and we brought them here to play. The only way you get match fit is by playing games as well. I’m hopeful that they can all be involved.”
