When Betsy first stepped onto a skateboard at an Urban Foxes skate camp two years ago, she could not have known how much that moment would shape her journey.

  • Leicester City in the Community's Urban Foxes programme continues to get young girls involved in urban sports
  • Activities include skateboarding, snow sports and rock climbing, all available within Leicester
  • Following the journey of one participant, Betsy, her increased self-confidence has led to helping younger participants
What began as a tentative introduction to a new sport has grown into a powerful story of resilience, confidence and personal growth, and a shining example of Leicester City in the Community’s mission in action: using the power of sport to change lives.
Urban Foxes is a programme delivered by the Club’s charitable arm, and funded by the VF Foundation. Its mission is simple but vital - to break down barriers and give girls access to urban sports that might otherwise feel out of reach.
Whether due to cost, confidence, lack of opportunity or social expectations, many girls never get the chance to try activities like skateboarding, snow sports or rock climbing. Urban Foxes exists to change that, and has been doing so for several years.
For Betsy, that change was immediate. Since her first skate camp session at Skate Parlour in Leicester, she has attended every Urban Foxes opportunity since; a testament to her commitment, enthusiasm and determination to keep pushing herself.

Through partnerships with organisations like Snow Camp charity, Skate Parlour and Social Climbing in Leicester city centre, Urban Foxes offers a wide range of experiences. Betsy has thrown herself into them all, from snowboarding on the slopes to scaling climbing walls and gaining climbing qualifications, Betsy has welcomed each challenge with enthusiasm and excitement.
On a skateboard, even when she first started, she was fearless. She approaches new tricks with confidence, unafraid of falling, always eager to improve. That resilience, her ability to get back up, try again and keep going, has become second nature. The growth has exceeded just her skateboarding skills, Betsy’s self-confidence has soared, developing into somewhat of a role model for younger participants.
Betsy helps the younger girls during sessions now, offering encouragement, advice and reassurance. Where once she was finding her own confidence, she now actively builds it in others. Her leadership, kindness and assurance are clear to see, and she carries herself with the confidence of someone who knows she belongs.
Betsy’s journey amazingly reflects the impact of Urban Foxes and Leicester City in the Community as a whole. By creating safe, supportive spaces where girls are encouraged to try, fail, learn and succeed, the programme empowers them far beyond sport.
Confidence gained on a skateboard or climbing wall carries into school, friendships and everyday life. It teaches young people that challenges can be faced, obstacles can be overcome, and growth, like Betsy’s, comes from persistence.
Leicester City in the Community believes in the power of sport as a tool for change. For Betsy, and countless other girls, it empowers them to realise their potential. Betsy’s story is a reminder that when young people are given access, encouragement and trust, they don’t just learn new skills, they grow into confident, resilient young people.
