Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy joins Leicester City on a free transfer
Former England international agrees two-year contract with the Football Club
The 36-year-old arrives with extensive Premier League and Championship experience
The 36-year-old former England international has signed a two-year contract at King Power Stadium and will immediately link up with his new team-mates as our pre-season programme continues over the coming weeks.
He joins following a summer departure from Southampton, where he spent 10 years and was part of the Saints side that secured promotion to the Premier League through the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs in 2023/24.
Speaking to LCFC.com, he said: “I’m really pleased to have joined Leicester City. It is a Club with a strong history and clear ambitions, and the conversations I’ve had about the direction of the team made this feel like the right challenge for me.
“I’ve experienced lots throughout my career and I hope I can use that to make a positive contribution, both in games and around the training ground. I’m looking forward to working with the other goalkeepers, competing every day and playing my part in what we want to achieve.”
Born in Guildford, McCarthy began his career with Reading, progressing through the Royals’ Academy before establishing himself at senior level during spells with the Berkshire club and a series of loan moves in the EFL.
He later had spells with Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace before joining Southampton in 2016, going on to make more than 150 appearances for the south coast club in all competitions.
McCarthy’s performances for Southampton also earned him international recognition with England, having made his senior debut for the Three Lions in 2018.
His arrival adds further depth and experience to our goalkeeping options as preparations continue for the new season.
Supporters could get their first opportunity to see him in action at King Power Stadium when we host Genoa in our final pre-season friendly on Saturday 1 August (7:30pm kick-off).
