Ben Nelson reflects on our 2-0 success over Bristol City on Tuesday
It was a first league win since January and first cleen sheet since September
Nelson scored the opener before Abdul Fatawu’s second
Jakub Stolarczyk also saved a second-half penalty to confirm the points
The Academy graduate’s header got us up and running at King Power Stadium before Abdul Fatawu doubled our advantage with a super volley before the break.
More was needed from the boys in blue to confirm the result, with Jakub Stolarczyk saving Emil Riis’ penalty in the second half, holding on for a first clean sheet since September.
It was a rewarding moment for the Foxes, who have improved over recent weeks since Gary Rowett’s appointment, finally getting that win on the board to climb out of the bottom three in the Sky Bet Championship.
“I can’t really describe it after how long a clean sheet’s been on our minds,” Nelson told us at full-time. “It’s just a brilliant feeling to get that one over the line.
“There’s a goal to go with it as well and the win, so it’s the perfect three.
“The heart and the momentum that the boys that came on in the second half brought us, bringing on fresh legs, just running and running, that’s all you can ask for from them and they did really well when they came.
“It’s been good since the new gaffer’s come in. We’ve seen improvements and obviously good away results. Having the fans there cheering us on was brilliant.
“Now we’ve had to convert it to a win on home soil and take the game to the opposition more and be confident in the way we’re playing and what we know we can go.”
On his first goal of 25/26, he added: “The ball’s helped me, it’s perfect from JJ (Jordan James).
“We’ve had a few conversations saying that I should score a few more goals from the set-piece coaches and stuff like that. I’ve tried to work on that. It’s great to come fruition and a brilliant feeling.”
There was also praise from our No.4 for Stolarczyk, whose penalty stop prevented the Robins from mounting a late comeback on Filbert Way.
“It’s a massive moment, the penalty,” he said. “They’re the kind of moments which change seasons. You can either fold there or you can stand up to it. Jak’s done brilliantly and stood up to keep the clean sheet and kept us going in the game. That was brilliant.
“We just want to make the fans happy and that’s all we can try and do. Maybe we’ve been doing better away recently so it’s good to be at home and get a great result for the fans.”
