There has been much encouragement from away displays – picking up a point from Stoke, Middlesbrough and Ipswich – but having also suffered a home defeat to Norwich, the Manager has now called on his squad to start adding points to performances.
We welcome Bristol City to King Power Stadium for a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday, before Queens Park Rangers come to town on Saturday. It’s in fact six matches of the next nine which will take place in LE2 – an opportunity for wins to climb the table.
‘Step up performances’
Rowett has been pleased with the structure and diligence of the defensive displays for large spells of the games he’s overseen, but now wants to see more creativity as well.
“We’ve got six out of the next nine games at home,” he told reporters after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Ipswich, courtesy of Patson Daka’s first-half goal.
“If you look at the balance of that, of course, we need to step up those performances and seize those opportunities. It’s quite clear that, defensively, in terms of the work-rate, we’ve done that really well.
“We know we can be a lot more creative in possession and do things a little quicker. I thought we saw some of that [on Saturday]. We’ve seen some of that in the away games, the second half at Stoke, I thought we were excellent.”
‘Piece it together’
The Manager emphasised, with 10 games to go, this is crucial moment of our season, challenging his players to ‘earn the right’ to climb the table, with us currently 22nd in the Sky Bet Championship.
“Of course, we have to start to piece those together this week – it’s two home games, two big games,” he added.
“I’ll never put the importance of the whole season on one game.
“You could [with] every single one of the next ones. But clearly, our season really starts on Tuesday. Our season in earnest starts on Tuesday.
“That’s where we have to earn the right to get to where we want to be. I don’t think we’ve got any excuses. We’ve got a good enough squad who have shown they can do it, so now we need to start talking, and we need to start doing.”
A ‘well-worked’ goal
The 52-year-old was also eager to highlight the quality of Daka’s strike in Suffolk, providing his thoughts on the selection considerations in the striker position.
“Pato works so hard for the team,” Rowett explained. “He’s a very different profile to Jordan [Ayew]. Jordan’s an incredibly good player, he comes and links the game and holds the ball up.
“Pato’s a running striker, who works tirelessly off the ball. Sometimes, when you’re that type of striker, it’s hard to go and score lots and lots of goals with the work you do.
“I thought he took his goal well. It was a well-worked set-piece that he got on the end of. We had some other moments where I felt we certainly should have been a little more threatening and a little more dangerous in those transition areas.”
