After two successive away defeats, Leicester City return to LE2 determined to put it right against a Blackburn side who may sit 21st in the Sky Bet Championship, but last time out defeated Southampton and are starting to look upwards in the table.
Cifuentes sat down with the media on Friday to preview the clash with Valérien Ismaël’s Rovers, who he expects to pose another stern test for the Foxes in the East Midlands.
‘Keep pushing’
Cifuentes is eager not to downplay the disappointment of the past week, which saw us lose out at both Hull City and Millwall, dropping Leicester down to 10th in the table.
Nevertheless, he was also keen to stress the importance of being able to reset the mindset, focus on ourselves, and to get performance levels closer to the desired heights.
“It’s very easy to be very disappointed after last week,” the Manager said in Seagrave. “I’m very critical with ourselves about our performances.
“There is definitely room for improvement. At the same time, I’m aware of how the Championship is. In a week like this, you can really lose a lot of positions in the table, but it can go the other way. That’s where my focus is.
“I think we need to understand what are the things we must improve, what are the things where we’re doing well. It’s not that we’re miles away.
“We are certainly doing some things well and we just need to keep pushing, keep improving as a team. What gives me confidence is that the team is training really well this week. The players are performing in training.
“We need to translate this into the games, but there is definitely not a feeling of ‘we’re okay’. We want to improve the situation.”
‘We need the fans’
Back on home soil, Cifuentes knows the fans will be looking for an improved performance on Saturday. As well as delivering the display the Blue Army are looking for, he also wants them to go home in the afternoon with three points in the bag.
“It's always important to spend time on the [training] pitch, especially in a season like this,” he added, discussing a full week of training in north Leicestershire.
“In a league like this, when you don’t have many long weeks, that part has been good.
“When you come from a disappointing week, actually what you want, from an emotional point of view, is to play the day after, just to change the mood, change the feeling.
“But you need to swallow this adversity. It should help us for what’s coming, to get more energy, to improve, to look at ourselves, to try to give the very best version of ourselves. Then, as well, we know we’re playing two games at home.
“I know the fans will not be happy with the position in the table, they will not be happy about our last performances. But we need to stay together.
“We need them. The players, of course, appreciate every time their supporters. This moment is when we need them the most because they can be so important to help us to recover this confidence, the small things that at the moment we’re missing.”
‘Huge respect for Blackburn’
City have another spell of three games in eight days on the horizon with Middlesbrough (home) on Tuesday and Norwich (away) the following Saturday. Cifuentes’ only focus, for now, though is on Blackburn, who he says Leicester must not underestimate.
“We know next week will be important, but at the same time, I take it step by step,” he explained. “My only focus at the moment – it’s the same for the players – it’s just to make sure we have a good performance against Blackburn.
“That we translate our style of play, our behaviours, into good performances and then we’ll have more chances to win the three points. That should be the first target.
“Then we’ll regroup and prepare for the next one. That will be Boro, but at the moment, my only focus is on Blackburn. Blackburn’s position is a bit tricky because they missed one game that were leading.
“There was just a few minutes left against a very good opposition. Probably, with this three points, they could be in a much higher position. They come after an important win against another very good team in Southampton.
“They are a team that are flexible to play with a back four or a back three. They have an experienced manager and players that have experience at Championship level.
“If someone thinks this will be an easy game, I think that will be exactly the wrong mindset. My mindset is that I have huge respect for all the opposition. It doesn’t matter what position they are in the table.”
