De Cordova-Reid’s tidy close-range finish after six minutes put us in front at King Power Stadium, although Rhian Brewster’s equaliser – just three minutes later – quickly levelled matters. Jordan James, with his seventh goal for the Club, pounced in the 41st minute, however, to settle the latest instalment of this East Midlands Derby.
It’s a result which leaves us 12th in the Sky Bet Championship and ends a two-game losing run, teeing us up nicely for the New Year’s Day visit to Sheffield United.
Up and running
December has been a month of contrasts for the Foxes – following a seven-point haul from three games with successive defeats either side of Christmas.
A 3-1 triumph at Pride Park started that positive run early on in the month and we have an excellent recent record against the Rams. With 10 wins in the last 12 in all competitions, the omens were good for Martí Cifuentes’ men.
Just six minutes into the 100th league clash between Leicester and Derby, we were in front. Abdul Fatawu’s enterprising work down the right flank unlocked the visiting defence, with the Ghanian cutting it back for De Cordova-Reid to slot home his fourth goal in six matches.
James doubles it
Derby’s quick-fire equaliser shared similarities with our opener, as former Fox Callum Elder dragged it back for Brewster to power the ball past Jakub Stolarczyk.
There were chances for both through a competitive first half. First, Luke Thomas spun on the spot and blasted wide of the far post before Brewster’s head was in his hands after nodding Sondre Langås’ inviting cross the wrong side of City’s post.
Before the interval, we were back in front. Thomas’ looped forward ball bounced up nicely for James to cushion a finish beyond Jacob Zetterström for his seventh goal in Leicester’s colours.
Seeing out the win
With a disappointing second half against Watford on Boxing Day still fresh in the mind, Cifuentes’ men had to overcome some hardship after the break. There were fresh legs to help, with a total of seven Academy graduates playing a part through the 90 minutes in LE2.
Aaron Ramsey, though, being eased back into match action after injury, had to be withdrawn just three minutes after emerging from the bench midway through the half. Ben Nelson was in the right place at the right time to block both Patrick Agyemang and Bobby Clark efforts too, while Derby were holding firm at the other end.
James’ long-range low drive skidded wide later on, before Rams skipper Ebou Adams nearly headed into his own goal, necessitating Zetterström to tip it over. When Andreas Weimann’s added-time shot pierced through the penalty area and bobbled just wide, nerves were frayed as well. But City were able to see out another victory over Derby – meaning the Rams have still never won at King Power Stadium.
