Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Oliver Skipp and Jordan James got the goals earlier this month to continue a favourable record against the Rams.
Ahead of this latest instalment of the rivalry, and with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, we take a look at some of the numbers and stories behind the clash…
Previous Encounters
Oliver Skipp
Monday evening’s contest marks the 100th league encounter between the two clubs, a rivalry that stretches back well over a century and has unfolded across the top two tiers of English football. We have enjoyed the upper hand in league competition overall, recording 32 victories, with more than half of the meetings coming in the second division. Recent history has also favoured the Foxes, particularly on home soil. Since moving to the Club’s current home, we are unbeaten in 11 meetings with the Rams. The most recent clash earlier this season ended in a convincing 3-1 away victory, continuing a trend of satisfactory results in this fixture in recent years.
Landmark Moments & Last Times

This derby has rarely lacked drama, but certain landmarks stand out. Only three post-war hat-tricks have ever been scored in City vs. Derby matches, all in blue, with Gary Lineker, Iwan Roberts and Ian Marshall on the rollcall. Goals from the spot have been an even rarer occurrence, with just 10 converted since the end of the Second World War. David Nugent’s successful spot-kick in the 4-1 win at King Power Stadium in January 2014 remains the most recent. Red cards have also been scarce, shown only four times across post-war meetings, while own goals have played their own role, including the moment in the 2017 FA Cup tie when Darren Bent scored for both sides across the two legs.
Played For Both & Top Scorers

The list of players to have represented both clubs is extensive. Familiar names recur throughout the decades, including Andy King, David Nugent, Paul Dickov, Martyn Waghorn, Robbie Savage, Steve Howard and Peter Shilton. Despite the sheer volume of shared alumni, scoring for both clubs has been a far rarer feat. Dean Sturridge remains the only player to have conventionally found the net for both sides in this fixture, although more recent encounters have produced goals for each club from the same player under rather different circumstances. City’s Fred Shinton and Derby legend Steve Bloomer share the distinction of being the leading goalscorers in fixtures between the clubs, each having scored seven times.
