Jordan Ayew reacts to our 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion
His opener was followed up by a late, late winner from Abdul Fatawu at a freezing King Power Stadium
It means Leicester City are back to winning ways after a defeat at Sheffield United
Ayew wants the Foxes to build on this and generate a positive sequence of results
Ayew was the opening goalscorer for Leicester City in that 2-1 success, as Abdul Fatawu’s 94th-minute stunner stopped Karlan Grant’s goal from securing a share of the spoils for the Baggies. It was a tough night for the Foxes, with sub-zero temperatures and the visitors having the majority of the goalscoring opportunities in the second half, but Martí Cifuentes’ men remained in the game before snatching all three points late on.
It came, too, after a disappointing New Year’s Day reverse at Sheffield United, denting the momentum created by a win over Derby County at home to close out 2025.
“After a defeat, it’s always good to bounce back and I think it was a difficult game,” Ghana international Ayew told us.
“The most important thing is that we won. It was a tight game. I think we fought hard and we were rewarded. We had to bounce back and we had to start well.
“What happened [at Sheff Utd] is the past and we needed to focus on what’s ahead of us. Today was the first step and hopefully we can go on a run. That’s the target.
“We have a cup game next [at Cheltenham Town] and we’ll focus on that. After that, we’ll focus on Coventry, try and get a win there, and we want to go on a run.”
Ayew’s 18th-minute opener was City’s reward for a decent start at King Power Stadium, and while the flow of the game changed after the break, Ayew insists Leicester have the capabilities to be more consistent moving forwards.
“We battled, we won a couple of second balls, we were in their half,” he said of the early exchanges. “We’re a good team, we can play good football, but we just need the confidence.
“When we start passing the ball around, no one can stop us, so we need to keep that going and keep on working because we have things to work on. We’ll keep on working.”
Jakub Stolarczyk was required to make several top stops in the second half and Ayew was pleased for the Polish goalkeeper: “He did brilliant today. That’s what we want from him. I’m really, really happy for him. The team are happy for him. Hopefully he can keep on.”
But it was City and Ghana team-mate Fatawu who stole the headlines in added time, lashing a volley home in the fourth of five added minutes to settle the contest.
“That’s Abdul,” the Foxes No.9 added. “He has so much quality. Sometimes it’s a bit frustrating but he’s young. We, as the senior players, need to keep giving him the confidence to keep on pushing and doing what he does best.”
