Last summer brought significant challenges. Rising costs and a growing deficit meant we had to reduce our inpatient ward from 31 beds to 18, limiting the number of patients we could care for at any one time.
But with support from the NHS and the incredible generosity of our community, we’ve begun to turn a corner.
We’re delighted to share that four beds, reopened temporarily in November, will now remain open permanently.
Even more encouraging, we are reopening two additional beds - meaning more local people can receive the specialist palliative and end-of-life care they need, when they need it most.
We’re already seeing the impact. Patients like Richard have come to LOROS in severe pain and, thanks to expert care, have been able to return home.
Richard’s wife Linda said: “Richard was in excruciating pain when he was transferred to the hospice.
“One day in LOROS started his journey back, with the doctors checking closely his reaction to medication and nurses reporting quickly on his pain levels. He is now comfortable thanks to LOROS.” We can help more people like Richard live their last weeks in comfort and dignity. It’s a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
However, the job isn’t finished.
We are still unable to reopen all 31 beds - not because the need isn’t there, but because funding doesn’t yet allow it. Demand for hospice care continues to grow, and for those who need it, time is precious.
That’s why we’re asking for your support.
With your help, we can reopen more beds and ensure that more patients and families across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland receive the compassionate care they deserve.
One day, it could be someone close to you who needs LOROS.
If you can, please consider making a donation. Together, we can be there for everyone who needs us.
To donate, visit loros.co.uk/donate or text LOROS plus the amount you wish to donate to 70480 to support. For example, to donate £5 text LOROS5 to 70480.
Thank you.
