All the damage was done in the first half, with the visitors lethal in front of goal during a blistering opening 45 minutes at King Power Stadium which Leicester never recovered from.
A warm reception greeted 15-year-old Jeremy Monga on 74 minutes, meanwhile, as the youngster, who’s been with the Club’s Academy since the Under-9s, made his debut – the second youngest LCFC player to do so.
The gap to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 17th now stands at 15 points with seven matches remaining; the first of which, a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion’s AMEX Stadium, awaits for the Foxes on Saturday (3pm BST kick-off).
A familiar story
Wilfred Ndidi
The tale of Leicester’s season was encapsulated inside the first two minutes of the game. A promising chance straight from kick-off saw Wilfred Ndidi’s flick on met by Jamie Vardy, who tested Nick Pope; the England ‘keeper alert enough to get down quickly and tip the ball behind.
Straight down the other end, Newcastle were much more clinical. Tino Livramento’s cross, overlapping former Fox Barnes on the left, was turned home at the back post by Murphy, who found himself afforded space which he made no mistake in taking advantage of.

Eddie Howe’s side wasted no time pressing home their lead, either. Fabian Schär’s audacious effort from inside his own half caught Mads Hermansen out and as the Dane scrambled back, the crossbar initially saved him, though Murphy was first on the scene.
The winger took a touch to compose himself before tapping in from close range and notching his 16th goal involvement of the Premier League campaign. It was to be an uphill battle from there, less than a quarter of an hour in.
There would be a third to rub salt in the wounds, too. Barnes started and finished the move, his electric pace eventually allowing Joelinton to get a shot away and despite Hermansen’s best efforts, he could only parry the ball into Barnes’ path and the winger did the rest.
Notable moments
Jeremy Monga
In what became a relatively open encounter ahead of the break, Conor Coady had to be alert to block Barnes’ goalbound shot, while Alexander Isak struck wide after James Justin was pressured into giving the ball away.
The best City could muster by that point was all Bilal El Khannouss’ own work, driving at the defence after picking the ball up inside his own half and forcing Pope to produce another near-post stop.
Leicester’s night was soon summed up through Patson Daka hitting both posts with a left-footed strike that trickled along the goal-line prior to landing straight back into the arms of a stranded Pope, who preserved his clean sheet with relative ease, though Wout Faes' header did flash past his far post in the latter stages.
